Nice to see the girls getting off the mark with a win against Parra today after a rough start against the premiers. Haven’t watched the game yet as I was at work but looking forward too catching up on it and seeing how much they’ve improved from round one.

(mods should we merge last weeks game day thread into this one? Not sure there’s the interest level here for weekly game day threads yet)

I watched it and it was pretty enjoyable. Pretty high error rate but its early yet. They have some handy players. Maliepo, the #6 looks very good and in the forwards, Butler and Albert-Jones look strong. Michaela Brake is a weapon but I'm picking she'll be getting targeted with some high balls. Its not something she's used to and looked a little. vulnerable.

Yeah I noticed some fairly fundamental schoolgirl errors, things that are more down to inexperience than lack of skill so I’m confident they’ll tighten those up and improve them.

At McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle: Warriors 12 (Ivana Lauitiiti 25’, Payton Takimoana 50’ tries; Patricia Maliepo con, penalty goal) North Queensland Cowboys 6 (Rosie Kelly 9’ try; Emma Manzelmann con) HT: 8-6.
Like father, like daughter.
Ivana Lauitiiti has announced herself to the NRLW with a try on debut to lead the Warriors to a gutsy 12-6 win against the North Queensland Cowboys during Magic Round on Sunday.
The teenager is the daughter of Warriors legend Ali Lauitiiti, who also scored on his NRL debut, against the North Sydney Bears in 1998.

Lauitiiti celebrated her 19th birthday on Saturday and could not have asked for a better present from coach Ronald Griffiths after receiving a late call-up to replace the injured Felila Kia on the bench.
Star winger Michaela Brake was also a late withdrawal due to personal reasons, replaced by another young debutante in Tyra Wetere.
Lauitiiti was lost for words after the game. “I’m still in shock I debuted,” she said. “Sorry, I don’t say much.”
The development player let her actions do the talking.

Injected into the game at 6-0 down in the 23rd minute, Lauitiiti made an immediate impact with a strong carry in heavy rain to draw the Warriors level once Patricio Maliepo nailed the conversion from in front.
Lauitiiti broke one tackle and carried another player across the try line with her.
Her strong ball carrying was perfectly suited to the wet conditions at McDonald Jones Stadium.
She was one of only five Warriors players to run more than 100 metres despite being on the field for only 24 minutes, and averaged 9.6m with every carry.
The Warriors scored 12 unanswered points to register their second win of the season.

Former Black Ferns rugby international Rosie Kelly had opened the scoring for the Cowboys inside nine minutes.
The Warriors dropped a cross field kick from Tahlulah Tillet and Kelly seized on the loose ball, surviving suggestions of a knock-on.
After converting Lauitiiti’s try, Maliepo nudged the Warriors in front with a penalty goal right before halftime.
Her 40/30 gave the Warriors one last scoring opportunity but they opted to take the points when a Cowboys player was penalised for lying on top of Lauitiiti, preventing her from playing the ball.
The Warriors scored the only points of the second half with 20 minutes remaining.
In-form winger Payton Takimoana capitalised on an overlap and some quick hands to score in the left corner after the Warriors chose to run from close-range on the fifth tackle.
Takimoana leads the Warriors with six tries and has scored in each of the past four appearances.
The Warriors lost captain and fullback Apii Nicholls to a head injury assessment for the final 10 minutes, but they hung on through staunch defence to secure their second win of the season.

The big picture

The six-point win snapped a run of two consecutive defeats for the Warriors and was only their second victory in five games since returning to the NRLW after beating the Eels 14-0 on July 13.

What’s next

The Warriors will be sweating on the outcome of Nicholls’ HIA as they return to Australia next Saturday to face the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium in Sydney. The match is being played as a part of a double header with the men’s team. The women’s game kicks off at 7.15pm.

It was a good game last night, we rolled the Bulldogs and it was seriously never in doubt. I'm surprised we're so low on the ladder, but that would be down to finding our feet in the competition.

Decorated sevens star turned Warriors winger Michaela Brake will miss the rest of the NRLW season as she and husband, Olympic rower Michael Brake, are expecting their first child together.
Brake announced the news on social media this morning and the Warriors subsequently released a statement on the 29-year-old’s news.
Brake had been ruled out of the side’s last three matches due to personal reasons.
The club said Brake told the team and staff about her pregnancy on Wednesday night.
“We’re really thrilled for Michaela and Michael. It’s an exciting time for them and for their families,” Warriors chief executive Cameron George said.

“Michaela has been terrific around the club since joining us but now she can focus on this next stage of her life. She has our very best wishes for what lies ahead.”

In her first season of rugby league, Brake featured in the opening four games of the Warriors’ season. Across those four appearances, Brake scored two tries, broke 29 tackles, made four line breaks and averaged 133 running metres per game.
The side’s first game of the season, a 30-6 loss to the Sydney Roosters, was Brake’s first-ever game of rugby league, having made the move over from the Black Ferns Sevens programme, with two Olympic gold medals among her accolades.

Brake has not featured for the Warriors since their 20-10 loss to the Gold Coast Titans in Auckland on July 26.
The Warriors are currently pushing for a spot in the NRLW playoffs with a 3-4 record, having their two-match winning streak snapped by the previously winless Canberra Raiders in Hamilton on Saturday night.
Having already had fullback Apii Nicholls, five-eighth Patricia Maliepo and halfback Emily Curtain ruled out due to injury, the Warriors had two players sent off in the contest after going down by double digits early. While they fought back well in the second half, it wasn’t enough to get the result.

Joking aside, I watched the game last weekend - Ali Lauitiiti's girl, Ivana I think, is an absolute weapon. Ruben Wiki's daughter on Canberra's left wing, and wasn't aware George Carmont's daughter plays for the Warriors, too.

Yeah considering how many debutants they had the team progressed really well through the season and should be right in finals contention next year.

When you think about who they are signing and the number of teams in the comp, the chances of the women winning a premiership before the men are pretty high.
I don’t really follow it much, but by the sounds of it Roosters and Broncos just throw coin at it. Broncos have just added the Dally M halfback to their winning squad
