Finals Week Two: Bulldogs v Panthers

Obviously any team still around at this point can be dangerous, but I agree we match up well with the Broncos, especially if old man Reynolds is playing 7. Walsh is the quintessential flashy fullback that we've made a habit of neutering these past 5 years and defensively they can fall to bits quickly when the blowtorch is applied to them. Carrigan is also their equivalent of Yeo, so losing him is an enormous blow.

Id prefer to play them over the Raiders, and I think the first week's results went pretty well for us all things considered.

Panthers star Liam Martin loved what he saw last week when great mates Moses Leota and James Fisher-Harris went after each other in Auckland which is why he won’t hold back when he takes on former teammate Viliame Kikau on Sunday afternoon.

Leota and Fisher-Harris spent years as Penrith’s bash brothers during their run of premierships, but it didn’t stop them from squaring up to each other at a scrum during the elimination final win over the Warriors.

“That’s as expected,” Martin replied when asked about the incident.

“They’re both competitors. Once you cross that field, it’s a game of footy. Once it’s done, you’re back to being mates so it didn’t surprise me one bit. I loved it.”

“I absolutely loved playing with ‘Kiks’. He’s a generational freak and one of the best back-rowers of all time,” he said.

“I enjoyed playing with him and learning off him, and I also enjoy those match-ups against him, so I can’t wait for the weekend.”

The pair never had to do much work against each other at training back in the day, with Martin not shying away from going after Canterbury’s most important forward as both teams fight for a spot in the preliminary final against the Broncos.

“I’ll try my best,” he said.

“There’s a bit of a fair size mismatch but I’ll throw everything I’ve got at him.

“He is pretty tough. There’s not one (wrestling session) that I can remember, but I usually avoided him. I won’t be doing that this weekend.”

Because we should lap the Dogs with or without Kenny but we probably can't beat Brisbane without him
That sounds like the perfect mindset to lose a game though.

And Penrith don’t think like that, in his book Ivan talks about the culture and players wanting to back up and play even when injured.

Im not saying Kenny should play if injured, but if his hamstring has recovered, then there is no way Ivan will rest him against the Dogs.

It's Ivan job to manage mindset and that's one thing he can't be questioned on.

If it is a calf strain for Kenny then they have a very high re injury rate and another week could be the difference between if it goes again or not.

If the club was lying and it's the shoulder hes been carrying all year then its a different thing.

The Broncos are flying. And we will be playing in 30 degree heat on a Sunday afternoon in a hostile Lang Park if we progress. I don’t think there is anything not tough or scary about that.

Time will tell.

Yeah, I am almost petrified. They have a grudge against us and will be giving 120%. That and they must feel as though Destiny is on their side after that win. They will also be fresh. Madge as coach has given them a toughness and resolve that was missing in their 2023 team.

The two teams that scared me the most are in-form Broncos and Storm. If we are to win #5, those last 2 games are the toughest.

Canterbury have a new spine. Burton to centre. Mahoney on the bench.

Crichton named in the 23. But if the injury reports are correct he is done. Interesting week ahead.

Awful decision, full panic stations from the Woofers.

Can't believe they extended Gus haha

I felt they had very little choice this week with Crichton gone. And the fact they looked better when those changes were forced said quite a bit to be honest.

If they bow out in straight sets they have no one to blame but themselves. Buying Galvin and moving around what was working was not a smart idea. If they kept him on the bench the whole year I could deal with it but it just wasn't an appropriate signing for 2025.

They were chips in with 6. Burton 7. Galvin. 9. Hayward. Burton and Galvin now in different positions. Hayward was the 14 when they were winning and now a starter. Sexton and Mahoney were kicked to the kerb.

Just can't see it, so would be a big opportunity missed not to get through this one.
