I get the arguments about certain grounds not being up to scratch even for home and away let alone semi finals and the NRL wanting to maximise money and people attending. However if you asked say a Tigers supporter do they want to play say the Storm at Leichhardt, Commbank, Allianz or Accor in a knock out semi what do you think they will choose to give them the best chance of winning? A neutral ground or the 8th wonder?
Well the Tigers are pretty mobile. They've used all of those as home grounds, + Campbelltown of course. Their premiership year they hosted week 1 at Accor. When they have a hot year in the current era of crowds, they'll be shutting out a lot of fans if they host a final at Leichhardt.

Bulldogs fans.. the most fickle fans in the league almost. A couple of years ago, couldn’t get 5,000 people to their games.. now they’re experts on every other team
Irony of a Sharks fan saying this aside, 5 years ago was COVID, barely any side were getting 5k lol

A team that was still averaging more than your team that was in the top 4. That one?

I think it's more that they seem to focus more on the short term, rather than long term success. These clubs (Cronulla, Dragons, Manly, etc.) won't invest in something like I'm suggesting long term because it might cost them money in the beginning.

Imagine if one of these teams said 'okay for the next 10 years, we are going to take a game to Allianz against our rivals and build it up.' The first year might get an average crowd, but if they keep pushing it, the crowds will eventually get bigger and they would eventually make more money out of that game then if they were to keep it at Brookvale, Shark Park, or Kogarah. Instead they seem to be waiting on their suburban grounds to get upgraded which isn't guaranteed to happen.

What if in 10/20 years the Sharks are forced to move away from Shark Park because they weren't able to secure funding for the venue? Penrith got lucky with the money they were given.

So where are these extra Sharks fans coming from? Yes the crowd will be bigger but that will be fans who are Roosters or Souths fans mostly

Are you saying that it isn't possible to have Sharks fans that live in Sydney but don't live in the shire?

If those Sharks fans are going to Shark Park now, then you aren't increasing the fanbase.

Panthers lost 5k playing at CommBank, that would be across the board

It's 10 k's up the road mate. Hardly a weekend road trip.
Feels like people are missing my entire argument.

The idea is to play it the city so fans who might live across town can attend. For example, say you're a Sharks fan but live in Hornsby, you aren't going to Shark Park but you might go once or twice a year into the city to watch them play. The whole point is to increase your fanbase/memberships/revenue.

Or you can just stay at Shark Park and without government funding you're screwed in twenty years.

I get it.
We are sort of agreeing.

Thinking about the NRL doing away with Saturday night finals in Weeks 2 and 3, I think I may have a thoery as to why the broadcasters, especially Channel 9, haven't objected to it.

In relation to free to air TV, Saturday nights are considered their "low ratings" night of the TV week. AS such having premium content, like an NRL Finals mnatch, whilst It might rate, is not a time slot advertisers will usually spend a lot of money on. By having the games at 4.00 pm (AEST) on a Sunday instead, it gives them a big lead in audience for the 6pm new.

Fox won't care as much as content is what they care about on the whole.

The Grand FInal though, Nine will resit it being afternoon time. Sunday night is free to air TV "big ratings" night of the TV week, and jhaving the NRL Grand Final will rate and enable them to charge a premium for advertising. That's whyt I don't think the NRL will oush to move it away from a Sunday night, especially as it being held in NSW, the Sunday it's held on is on a long weekend.
