Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

It seems pretty obvious but the NRL seem hesitant to introduce marquee players.

It would make sure our top 34 players are paid well enoght they'd never leave.

Ive seen ppl say it'll make the strong teams stronger but I agree that'll it'll even out the talent.

For example Broncos would make Haas and Walsh thier marquee players meaning the Titans could make Mam one of thier marquee signings. The Broncos get weaker and the Titans get stronger.

It's a good way for poorly performing clubs off the field go broke by throwing stupid money at a player. The system we have currently works.

Geez even in the Super League, they have the marquee player allowance, but not all clubs use it. Not all clubs even use there entire salary cap.

If a club throws stupid money that causes them to go broke then they deserve it. This is only one or two players in a team, the rest would be paid under the salary cap, and if it helps keep talent like Walsh and Cleary in the game, then good.

Another way could be to give players more revenue from names on the back of jerseys. The game needs to come up with more ways to get star players more revenue. The amount of money that the Broncos pay Walsh is pittance compared to the value Walsh gives to the Broncos.

So Walsh can take his talents elsewhere if it's money he is soley after. But at some point, results, location etc matter as well. Walsh may command more money elsewhere, but I feel the Broncos allow him to be his best.

Then you look at someone like Ponga, who althought a good player, would be much better taking a little less to get to a stronger club who could utilise his talents more. (Ponga if your reading this, have a chat to Gus).

Keep it at one marquee player per club then if you need to, but the Broncos could afford to give Walsh $10 million a year if they were allowed to. Unfortunately they are stuck with a salary cap that keeps poorly run clubs like Cronulla afloat. It would be a shame if Union were to poach him and use his marketability to grow Union in this part of the world at the expense of the NRL.

Also if all Ponga cared about was winning then yes I'm sure he would take less (as would most players). But Ponga should be paid what he is worth, and he brings a lot to Newcastle both on and off the field. I'd be more than comfortable for Newcastle to have Ponga as their marquee.

I think a winning Newcastle without the noose of Ponga's and Browns contracts killing what else they could do with the team is better for the club. Seeing you can't get rid of Brown, and you have some guys who are a rung below Ponga but a quarter of the money, Ponga's money might be better distrubuted to have a more balanced squad.

No matter what Ponga brings off the field, winning on the field will bring more.

I wish we never signed Brown to that contract but obviously someone at Newcastle sees big things from him. Ponga is fine, we just need him to stay healthy.

You won't have the depth to compete. It takes the whole top 30 to win a comp. Having a good 17 is nice. But injuries do happen. Ponga is the odd man out to make a better team at this point. He needs to go for the good of the club. Especially as you guys are rebuilding and really need to be able add that depth your missing currently.

Marquee players payment could be made up from sponsors and owners, Similar to how other big competitions around the world dip into owners and sponsors pockets. Doesn't need to be the NRLs money. But even if it was the NRLs money, they have close to a billion revenue pa, it would be chicken feed to spend a few million to keep the games most marketable players.

IF R360 takes off they'll take the NRLs top 50 players, that will put us back a decade, we'll lose the casual fans and the gains we've made in crowd attendance and viewership. And how much do you think DaZN and Nine will pay for broadcast rights when the biggest star is Will Kennedy?

If a player is off contract how can they legally punish them signing with any prospective employer?
Obviously it needs the approval of the clubs and the rlpa

Union did it for a century with zero consequences.

Maybe the law doesn’t apply to them

If R360 takes the top 50 players, which is never happening cause they need forwards and not backs that have never played Rugby Union in there lives and can't setup a ruck properly or read defences, it says that Union players just aren't good enough and our product is better.

Your building a pretty big strawman argument, and really the only people who will leave are some wingers/fullbacks chasing money, or at the end of there careers.

It's all very alarmist for something that is a bad idea to start with, and players should tred cautiously when looking into it, ensuring that the money is in the bank account from the start.

Like one of the main attractions is that it's tax free. Well the Australian tax office might have a different idea given you can base yourself in Australia, and to collect tax free money you would need to live overseas for over 6mths of the year. It's all a bit of a can of worms they are opening.

Here is a good article explaining this minefield.

Wow just saw the article about ten year bans

Obviously the legal advice was positive

They should’ve done this when Wendell sailor first went over

This should also apply to anyone who goes to rugby union

BS

Brisbane won the comp this year with Walsh and Haas both on $1M+ contracts

You think this decision has been made without lawyers looking at it this before it was released?

Doesn't mean the NRL wants to test it. It's easy to throw idle threats out. Actually going through with them is the real test. And PVL would know that they would likely lose in court due to restraint of trade. The game went through this with Terry Hill and the draft years ago.
