The amount the of chiefs their are would be very interesting
I would guess over a few thousand
Chiefs
I read . Their are over 800 different languages spoken in PNG
From all the villages. Town's
Tribes. The most in the world
Many different variations of the spoken word
Very special place PNG
Wow! If done right, this could be bigger and more important than anyone ever actually realized.
What the Springboks done for South Africa comes to mind, obviously very different but as culturally significant maybe more so for them.
I hope this opportunity isn't lost.

For whomever it was the other day asking if the new club are actually called 'PNG' Chiefs or 'Papua New Guinea' Chiefs ... well, I have an answer for you. 'PNG Chiefs' is the name submitted to IP Australia. That's the official name.

A sensible choice.

I think it also, slightly, distinguishes it from the national team.
Papua New Guinea play against Australia.
PNG play against Newcastle, Canberra, South Sydney, ect.

Current trends suggest union is going to continue to fade further into obscurity. We can't not give new clubs names that already exist out there in the sporting landscape just purely for that reason.

Now, if that was happening AND the team from another sport with the same emblem was in the same area, fair call. I doubt this was considered, but if, say, PNG called themselves the Crocodiles, and in 10yrs when the Aus Govt funding dries up, PNG become unviable and they relocate to Cairns, then you'd have the Cairns Crocodiles in the same region as basketball's Townsville Crocodiles. 2x Crocodiles teams in FNQ.

Again, that's unlikely to have been a factor in their decision-making process. It's just a hypothetical.

Point being, clubs shouldn't have to be concerned with having an emblem that already exists in another sport. Unique is better, mind you..!

PNG chiefs will be bigger and more popular than the Waikato chiefs in their 1st season never mind in 5-10 years time.

ok the PNG chiefs will have the advantage of being the only professional sporting club in the country and tens of thousands of fans from outside the country as their 2nd team etc but it is what it is.
