Makes you wonder why companies like Kia, Redzed, BYD and Toyota pay so much to get on the chest??
Past history, I guess. Maybe?!
20-something years ago, there were only 3 kinds of kit sponsorship:
* main (which was 2 positions: across the chest ...albeit a bit lower down than today... and upper-back)
* sleeves, and
* shorts.

The sleeve sponsorship logos were smaller than today, and were deemed the 2nd highest value. The main sponsorship was the most valuable given a) how large it was compared to the other sponsorship logos, and b) the fact it was featured on both the front AND back of the jerseys.

These days, I wouldn't be surprised if sleeve sponsorships are almost as valuable as the front-of-jersey sponsorship. They are much larger than they used to be, they feature on both sleeves (thus get onto the jersey twice), and they get seen around about as much on TV and in photographs as the front-of-jersey sponsor.

That budget direct guy is smart.

Big companies want national exposure when it comes to advertising because they run national campaigns, not local ones. He's effectively covering 90% of the country with the Bears, Storm, Dolphins and Rabbitohs.
Look I don`t know what`s going on with this bloke from Budget Direct and the board who`ve obviously signed off on this campaign but deliberately antagonising a huge chunk of the sports following public strikes me as odd. Sure we love it, but it`s odd.
Now maybe he just really believes what he`s saying, but to come out and publicly put down a rival code and openly mock them with the singlet thing is really out there for a big company.
And as far as the national exposure thing, like it or not the fumbles do have the jump on us with that one presently.
Anyway I love it and people like him saying these things publicly, whether strictly true or not, can become self-fulfilling prophecies and start to get accepted as fact and that certainly works for us.

It's partially because one of their rival insurance companies, AAMI, sponsor the rival league. And that company also sponsors the Storm's home ground. It's like back in 2018 when the Warriors, sponsored by Vodafone, were playing at Optus Stadium in the NRL Telstra Premiership

Perth Bears sign landmark apparel deal with global giant New Balance
Perth Bears have secured a major coup by signing with New Balance, joining the same athletic brand stable as billion-dollar baseball star Shohei Ohtani and cricket legends Pat Cummins and Steve Smith.

The Perth Bears have links to some of the world’s most recognisable – and richest – sports stars after the NRL new recruits penned a four-year partnership deal with an athletic brand giant.

Global footwear and apparel company New Balance has an extensive list of individuals and teams on their books, from Aussie cricket heroes Pat Cummins and Steve Smith, to US tennis ace Coco Gauff and Major League Baseball pitcher Shohei Ohtani.

The Japanese superstar signed a $1 billion 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in late 2023, the largest professional contract in sports history.

Now the Perth Bears are part of the same stable having finalised a team apparel agreement which includes New Balance designing the team’s on-field kit for the club’s inaugural NRL season in 2027.
Perth Bears CEO Anthony De Ceglie said the Bears were “the most exciting story in Australian sport”.

“We’re incredibly honoured that a brand with such incredible global recognition as New Balance would team up with the Bears … in its first foray into the NRL at a club level,” he added.

“New Balance has a commitment to elite-level performance and authentic community engagement that aligns perfectly with the Perth Bears.”

Coach Mal Meninga said the Bears were building a club that represents communities on both sides of the country.

“When you are uniting two such passionate rugby league heartlands, the standard must be elite,” he said.

“New Balance is a globally competitive apparel brand, which the Perth Bears are striving to emulate both on and off the field for every single fan, regardless of where they are.”

Wow - excited to see what a different manufacturer can come up with. I expect the home jersey to be something fairly basic like the classic hoops though.

Quite a few teams in the AFL have deals with New Balance - but it’s not New Balance directly, instead it’s Belgravia Apparel who have a partnership with New Balance. It’s like the new ISC/Under Armour thing.

They’re a supplier for the QRL and NSWRL so that might be an indication of what their rugby league gear and jerseys will look like.

No the NRL team the Perth Bears have a sponsorship directly with globally recognised multi-national New Balance, the fumbles just with one of their offshoot underling companies.
That`s a big, big difference perception wise, very telling where New Balance want to put their name.

It's exactly the same. This from both the NRL and official release:

Belgravia Apparel, New Balance’s elite teamwear partner in Australasia, will lead the rollout of both supporter merchandise and performance gear across the partnership.

New Balance Australia Regional General Manager Dean Howard said:

“At New Balance, our job is to aid athletes in their pursuit of excellent, whether that means helping professional athletes win medals, or propelling the community to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

“In partnership with Belgravia Apparel, we are proud to partner with the Perth Bears and look forward to seeing the partnership come to life over the next three years."

Belgravia Apparel is the Australasian elite team wear partner of New Balance, supplying both supporter and performance products for a broad range of professional and amateur sporting organisations.

When West Coast Eagles announced New Balance would be making their kit, it was Dean Howard who did the announcement (https://www.westcoasteagles.com.au/news/1243881/new-balance-up-and-running), same for the Brisbane Lions (https://www.lions.com.au/news/1245560/lions-partner-with-new-balance-for-next-four-years) and the recent one with Cricket Australia for the BBL (https://www.sportcal.com/news/new-balance-replaces-nike-as-bbl-wbbl-kit-provider/?cf-view)

Okay, okay, no need to be picky.

And it was terrible in Super Rugby when the Saffa teams went that way. You had no idea of where any of those teams came from and eventually they reverted and put regional identification back in front.
do you mean NZ teams?

edit- do you mean every team apart for 2 oz teams?

Yeah both the NZ and SA teams took the base Cities/Regions out of their names as they were franchise teams that represented multiple provinces/regions and not a single one, they neither country reverted back and for some reason only sone of the Aus audience seemed to have an issue with it

His comments are to a marketing industry magazine. 99.9999% of the public will never become aware of it. Those that do are in marketing, or are chronically online AFL or NRL fans. There's been no public backlash so far and there won't be.

In 2002 I would have agreed with you that AFL had the biggest national exposure. But not in 2025. Look at his assertions:

We know that the NRL is really moving through the ranks to be the number one sport. -- true, it now is, as reflected in the NRL's TV ratings.

When you add in WA, it will obviously start to progress into clear number one -- true, the gap will widen as NRL gets greater exposure to 3 million extra people. What the Bears will do will be similar to the Storm, as he portends (see further below).

It’s the demographic of people who are turning up to the games, it’s really become a family sport. -- true, but also hidden in that demographic comment is that it is a multicultural sport which better reflects the multicultural identity of Australia. It also skews towards a younger audience than AFL or Union.

It also generates one of the only growing audiences in Australia, and it actually does that still on free to air and on SVOD and BVOD. -- true, audiences are fractured now so to be posted record attendance and ratings is a testament to growing brand confidence

[AFL] a sport that is extraordinarily long to watch and it does have a very, very, very significant lean towards just one state. And we really wanted a nationwide strategy. -- all true, it's getting harder for broadcasters to get youth demos to tune in for 3hr+ events. Look at the current Ashes sessions. 16-39s are about 16-18% of the total audience. The NRL GF which was essentially a 3hr+ event managed to get around 25% of its total. The average AFL viewer is older, whiter and more likely Victorian, than the average NRL viewer.

Every single person in Victoria supports the Storm, and everybody in Victoria supports one of 12 different teams [in the AFL]. That would be an incredibly inefficient way to address a whole state. You’ll notice that for two of our teams, there’s only one team in the state, which means that you get the whole state behind it. -- you could argue whether every Victorian supports the Storm but in terms of bandwagoners it's effectively true and this is why I hope the NRL doesn't put another team in Melbourne any time soon. The Storm are the one team that everyone in the city and state can back. They are Victoria's team. It will eventually position the Storm to become bigger than any individual AFL club. 20-30 years from now on it is possible that the Storm will be bigger than the Broncos. That's what the Budget Direct guy is hoping to get in on the ground floor of.
