The grand plan

I would go even as far to say that if the NRL admitted a Fijian team in right now Rugby League would supersede Union within a year or two(virtually overnight) and become the mega dominate sport in the country. I mean there would be nothing like it in all of the Pacifica. Having the first and only NRL team playing biweekly in their homeland would generate such an unparalleled sense of pride and excitement that it would be frenzy like. The sponsors and money would come in from everywhere. The buzz would be insane. NRL players would be so easy to recruit too. I mean how hard would it be to entice players and their families to move to an island paradise like Fiji? Not to mention the tourism bump for when your team is playing them for that awesome sport-cation we all love to have. The amount of kids that would instantly switch over to Rugby League would be unprecedented and infectious.

I really can't see much wrong with this idea and have been saying for a while now that Fiji is so under utilized from an RL development point of view. Ever since Parra got Semi Radradra I started to look into Fiji and realized that League could gain a significant asset and ally if we as a sport were smart enough to develop them correctly. I know this won't be happening anytime soon, but for mine as soon as we get Perth, PNG, Christchurch & maybe a 3rd Brisbane team sorted, Fiji should be the priority and as with the Hunters, introducing the Kaiviti Silktails into the NSW Cup in 2027 is a great second step (they are already competing in NSW junior comps) towards the grand plan. I would be aiming within a 10 year window from now.

But the sooner this sort of development and expansion happens I believe the better the game as a whole will be. There is no shortage of great athletes in Fiji. The trick is to get the best of them playing RL.

As for Adelaide? Well if we got all these new teams in and running successfully and the NRL is absolutely flying by that stage, then I think even a delusional AFL State like them would come to its senses somewhat (not all, cos stupid is stupid) and ask us for entry and what they can do to be part of the greatest razzmatazz football competition in the Southern hemisphere. One of my must haves for this to happen is a purpose built 40K rectangular(preferably with a roof or built so a roof can be added later) stadium on a trainline and very close to the city in a central location.

We can dream can't we?
Just re-read your post. It makes a heap of sense! I have personally taken a RL footy to Fiji and the village kids went bananas!! (My Mrs by the way is from Rakiraki Ra, koro Vitawa.

I’ve been saying super league should do similar to capture the tv market here in Australia for a game a week

“In the meantime the RFL is negotiating with Sky, TNT and separately with DAZN about potential broadcasting contracts from next year, which is why the NRL needs to table its own proposal very soon if it is to cut across those negotiations.”

Martyn Sadler on trl

England doing their own tv deals doesn’t shock me I’ve always questioned what extra value Pvl could bring to their deal

Sadler is against any nrl takeover as he sees our priority (obviously) always being here

Sadler believes in Featherstone and Oldham being top tier teams. Game will never move beyond northern sport without NRL.

Fantasy land stuff from the RFL, all signs point to the fact that they`ve become little more than dispensable filler for Sky. TNT, someone always says they`re about to bid and DAZN would offer them a pittance.
Their best shot to do more than just grimly hang on is to team up with the NRL, but they are too stupid and proud to admit that.

SL owners havent yet been shown an offer from. The nrl so I doubt they are pushing back lol.

250 million quid mate …for a group that hasn’t got two bob to rub together..what more do you need to know … although I’m sure they know more about what’s going on then we do

I think the clock is ticking and the NRL needs to get something locked up on the TV deal just in case the world goes to crap again …: I don’t think they have time for protracted negotiations so it might need to be next time around for the ESL

Nrl offer of 50 million pounds a year for 5 years for total control

Proposal to be tabled this week

If Dazn aren’t coming on board that’s a huge risk for arl as 30 million a year needs to come from their annual profit if the tv deal doesn’t go up

Would wipe out all our profits with no return for the nrl

Would only work if dazn pays NRL extra to run superleague. V'landys got government to pay for PNG. Don't think he wants NRL to cover anything.

You mean like Vegas, PNG, Perth ? This could be huge if they pull it off, worth the gamble and it won`t send us broke even if it doesn`t work.
If we aren’t getting a financial benefit then nope I’m not a fan of it at all

If it breaks even and we don’t put any money in sure that’s fine

But at a cost of us spending 500 million and losing it ??

As pippen says Pvl probably knows it won’t cost him anything and I’m being overly dramatic

If he loses that money the rlpa clubs and state bodies would call for his head

The big thing that SL overlook here is by teaming up with the NRL, you get cross promotion. SL will be live in Australia, NZ and PNG and promoted! They'll become worth more just on that to broadcasters. The same can be said for the NRL.

This will be great for RL, we can boost each other up.
It's just so infuriating when SL clubs are using language that is more us vs them..
Just shut the f**k up, take the cash and get on board!

Personally, I’m not a fan… I don’t see a lot of upside for the NRL given the 130 yr history over there , and I don’t think English administrators or fans will take too kindly to Australians running their show …. They will likely have an eye on the money but will try and get their hands on that without giving up the control…

This is a much bigger risk for the NRL than losing $10m when Vegas started up

The upside could be huge, NRL Europe owned by the NRL.

Bit like how they were going to make tens of millions off Americans gambling on the NRL when Vegas kicked off ? We don’t hear much about that 2 years later ..

What are they actually owning here ? I heard it proposed initially that they would have a 30 percent ownership but that was months ago and nothing since..

Look … no one will be happier than me if this goes ahead and is successful … I have some concerns as mentioned and it might be a little premature for the NRL to take this risk now in my view …lot of work to be done bedding down their own expansion

Like what ? there`s absolutely nothing the NRL can do now with these expansion teams, they`ll more than look after themselves now, we`re seeing the Bears raking in the sponsors, recruitment is strong, maybe a bit of joint promotion etc. etc. PNG will be similar.

Odd comparison, NRL Europe will be a ten to fifty year project building around what already exists.
