For all the good the metro line does, it sure has been out of service a lot since it opened. Why are they so unreliable? Is it poor equipment, poor design or both?
Are you taking the piss? It's none of that.
It has hardly been out of service since its inception unless it has been for transitioning for testing for the extensions of the line.
The first section Tallawong to Chatswood opened with a few teething problems in 2019. So be it, as it was new train technology in Oz. The small problems were corrected pretty quickly.
When the Chatswood - Sydenham extension opened (through the city), yes there was some closures required for testing for it. It had nothing to do with the reliability of the system.
With the lessons learnt from the stage one opening, the stage two actually worked really well.

Now that stage 3 is getting close to opening (Sydenham to Bankstown), line closures need to take place for that further testing. The regular closures have nothing to do with the reliability of the system.

Your claim that it is unreliable is wrong.
It actually is the most reliable rail line in Sydney, with a 99.5% on time service. It's automated of course, which pretty much ensures this.

You can tap and go in QLD and have been able to for about 2-3 years now
Yeah, I'm aware of that. My son has a Go Card and uses it every day. Gronk is correct in pointing out that merkins still choose to avoid paying a train fare even at 50 cents.

Yeh. That is pathetic. And sad.
We don't have 50 cent fares in Sydney. However, public transport is still extremely cheap.
For example, on Sunday, I travelled from Castle Hill to Watson's Bay and back.
A bus from home to Castle Hill Metro station. A bus then from Castle Hill to Epping. Then, a train from Epping to Central. Then, another train from Central to Circular Quay. Then, a ferry to Watsons's Bay.
I did the reverse trip on the way home.
The whole two-way trip cost me less than $8 on my Opal Card. Sure, there are weekend caps on fares, but that is amazing value.

Was all that because of issues on the rail network?

I have been told it's due to 'Harmonic imbalance' between the wheels and the track.

I'm curious to know more from your "source".
When the first stage of the metro opened, (Tallawong to Chatswood) the line took over the Epping to Chatswood section of the Sydney trains line, and this wasn't an issue. The tracks and wheels on the metro haven't needed to be replaced for that section. The trains on the Bankstown section are running on the same track gauge as the old line for both sections. I'm intrigued as to why this has now become an issue and would like to learn more.

It took longer (more buses) because the metro was shut down for the weekend for testing of the new extension of the line. This just has to happen, although it appears to be more testing than for the previous extension of the line.

Well, I hope there's no issues when/if we head to Sydney in May. We will be relying on the public transport system quite heavily while in town.

Good luck.
Keep an eye on this.
