I still remember when vic.tards used to whinge when the nrl would play two different games every Friday night tailored to qld & nsw… somehow I think if the nrl returned to that and started flogging them even more in the ratings they would take issue with it again.

One game per market, same as NRL.
So afl is providing how many hours of game broadcast per round on Fox if games are on same time and other games overlap? If none of them overlap/run same time then it would be roughly 24 hours a week compared to the NRL, 16 hours, where every game has an individual broadcast slot. If we include fta it’s another 6 hours per week for NRL, not sure how afl fta works. Wookie might know the answer to these questions.

Haha Fumble again having to use the double header approach to match the NRL ratings.

It'd be like if NRL scheduled Broncos vs Cowboys in QLD and then Bulldogs vs Parra in NSW, may as well do a third game too like Storm vs Warriors into VIC. Imagine NRL did all that... and just barely got the same viewing figures as a single AFL game.

Would that be seen as a win? I don't think so.

The AFL has 9 games per round (excluding bye rounds). At 3 hours per broadcast that's 27 hours of content. If two games clash, two different channels are used. (FOX Footy 504 and FOX Sports 503).

The current broadcast deal provides for 3.5 games on average per round on FTA.
This includes:
Thursday Night 7.30pm game
Friday Night 7.30pm game
Sunday Afternoon 3pm game
Additional marquee games (ANZAC Day, ANZAC Eve, King's Birthday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 6-7 Sunday night games)

Plus guaranteed local market games for NSW, QLD, SA, WA teams which may replace one of the above "national" games if there is a timeslot clash. These are live except on Saturdays in the first 10 rounds where they are delayed up to 2 hours to allow Foxtel an exclusively live Super Saturday.

Fox gets the states where fta isn’t showing for those games ie the dregs

no wonder why Dazn want to cut their tv deal

It's nothing to do with the NRL, it's about giving local teams maximum FTA exposure in their local markets.
The NRL would be wise to do the same with all Perth Bears games live on FTA into WA to give them exposure to the biggest possible audience.

But when games are on at the same time then the audience will split as opposed to 100% of available fans watching both games. Most of the people in my circle are nrl supporters but will watch 6-8 games per week not just the team they support. Not sure if afl fans just watch the team they follow or will watch multiple games per week

AFL games run for 3 hours as opposed to NRL's 2 so it's harder to schedule stand-alone timeslots for every game. Usually the start times are staggered by 1-2 hours so you get to watch part of each game. Not many fans will watch every single game in a round: Usually most watch Thursday night, Friday night and their own team plus any other games of specific interest.

Fumble is sandbagging their FTA numbers by scheduling these double headers so NRL doesn't kill them on it. That's why they're doing it. In the process they are hurting their overall viewership/STV numbers, because they'll get fewer viewers ie those that just won't watch the clashing games. This will result in a long term consequence once their media deal is up for renewal.

The goal of content creators like NRL and AFL is to spread out their content and have people watching as much of it as possible. You can't do that if you're running games parallel to each other. But also they can't hurt their prime time FTA numbers either so Fumble are making a trade off call, a necessary one where they have no choice unless they want to be smased by NRL in FTA.

Rubbish. This isn't a new arrangement. It has been the case for the past 20+ years.
I'm not saying it's a new phenomenon. What's changed is NRL can now get the same ratings or more with the 1 game verses the AFL's 2 games, PLUS it has staggered games which will result in more viewers watching more games and the AFL has 1 fewer game for people to watch live - then it will change the game in the media rights revenue. Especially since the NRL will also match the total amount of games per round as the AFL with Perth and PNG which it currently does not match with one fewer game.

I can`t wait until they have to run 4 games on both Thursday and Friday nights to cover their arses. 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Also look at the breakdown, is AFL really 'taking over' QLD when the Lions only get 36k in Brisbane, but Eels v Bulldogs sydney teams NRL game gets 109k in Brisbane.

Data below from Wookie.

Sunday #AuSport breakdown
#AFL 7 Mel 149k 7mate Syd 15k 7mate Bris 36k 7 Adl 38k 7 Per 160k
#NRL 9 Syd 186k 9 Bri 109k

So even when a brisbane team is playing, btw the multi-premiership winning top of the table Brisbane team, the AFL can't even get a third of the viewers in Brisbane than a NRL game featuring no Brisbane team.
