An oval ?

Nope

A multi purpose stadium (I know everybody hates it) is probably the best chance of something happening in Canberra. The Raiders will probably end up playing at Manuka Oval if they want to stay in Canberra.

Watch the Raiders and Brumbies crowd drop as a result if that happens. I know I'd stop going to Newcastle games if they were played on a cricket oval.

Agreed. I’m from Newcastle and the stadium was lucky to receive the funding it did from the State and Federal governments at the time.

I might be very cynical but I don’t think the ACT or Federal government are going to spend money on a rectangular stadium. They might get involved though if a Big Bash franchise and an AFL team came to Canberra because there would be a perceived need.

Then they can make it a rectangular multi purpose ground

Normal configuration can be 120m X 72m, with lift out seats

The Giants can play AFLX whenever the play in Canberra

Haha I agree. Barr is definitely trying to get a fumbleball side there but I think they will go with another WA side or another QLD side because of that Olympic Stadium

Afl's current tv deal ends in 2031. Most likely they will have the 20th team at the start of the next deal in 2032. So we will know in the next two to three years where the 20th team will be located. Tassie is 19th.

I'd be surprised if they went with another team in a small market. A second team in Brisbane with that 63k stadium looks tempting for them. But a point of difference with the Lions would be challenge.

If Canberra miises out on team 20, then it becomes pointless to build a "multipurpose" stadium with possible retractable seating. Stay at Manuka.

It comes down to people power. Do people in Canberra want a new stadium? We all know health, education, aged care etc are important priorities. However when will a new Canberra stadium become a priority? If ever. It has been talked about for nearly 20 years and the stadium itself is 50 years old and is falling apart.

A stadium placed where it faces the Parliament House would certainly be unique.. Is it possible for a stadium to be built at City Hill?
