Sonny Bill Williams reportedly homesick and lonely in France

By Dean Ritchie | September 24, 2008 12:00am

SENIOR Bulldogs officials have reluctantly discussed the possibility of NRL deserter Sonny Bill Williams returning to their club.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the Bulldogs have heard that Williams is lonely and homesick playing with French rugby union club Toulon.

Bulldogs officials say Williams would have to return "on bended knee" and "under the club's terms and conditions".

It is understood a member of Williams' camp has spoken to a Bulldogs official.

Williams' manager, Khoder Nasser, is travelling to France to check on the welfare of his client.

There are rumours Williams is upset at his treatment by Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal.

One source said: "The guy is a tyrant who is giving Sonny Bill hell."

Williams is out injured at the moment with a leg problem.

Some senior insiders at the Bulldogs would be prepared to accept Williams back - but others are vehemently against his return.

Bulldogs fans would also have to be pacified after Williams' walk-out.

Nasser would be encouraging Williams to remain in France, given that his partner Anthony Mundine paid the Bulldogs $750,000 compensation.

"He would have to try and repair the irreparable," the source said.

The NRL has banned Williams from playing league but the Bulldogs believe, if the situation arose, they could persuade the game's hierarchy to reverse that decision.

"I have heard the rumours and I'm not surprised," Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg said last night. "Sonny Bill made his choice a couple of months ago. The club has moved on since then.

"It's common knowledge he can't play in the NRL with any other club than us prior to 2013."

Bulldogs chairman George Peponis was yesterday aware of talk that Williams may want to return.

Shocked Bulldogs players were furious and unforgiving when Williams walked out in late June.

Publicly, they claimed they were still friends with Williams. Privately, they told of their anger at what their former teammate had done.

Bulldogs skipper Andrew Ryan said Williams would have a lot of wounds to heal if he ever returned to the NRL.

"It would take a lot," Ryan said bluntly at the time.

"He's hurt a lot of us.

"We'll cross that bridge if we ever come to it, but we'll see."

boo f**kin' hoo

the NRL and the Bulldogs should tell this bloke to bugger off if he comes grovelling back.

That was quick.

Typical famewhore, bitches about all the publicity when he's in the spotlight then apparently gets 'lonely' when he escapes it...

ofcourse the dogs will take him back ... they'd bend over backwards to do anything to get him back and the NRL would scratch their vanact area collecting mould between their legs and reverse their decision to ban him ...

He won't come back.

Even if he did, he would half to play for half of what his previous contract was worth. For that reason alone, Money Bill Williams will not be back anytime soon.

God I love it when people get their comeuppances.

Umaga out and Connolly in at Toulon

THE tempestuous climate at big-spending French rugby club Toulon could be set to claim its first victim, with sources suggesting incumbent coach Tana Umaga could lose his job to former Wallabies and Stade Francais mentor John Connolly.
Connolly is understood to be heading to France this week to speak with Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal. It is uncertain whether Connolly will interview for Umaga's role directly, or a director of rugby position within the club, but the very fact the Queenslander has been summoned to France represents a major undermining of the former All Black's authority.
Rumours have been circulating for several weeks regarding Boudjellal's displeasure at Toulon's tepid performances in France's Top 14 competition this season. The club sits in the seventh place with two wins, two losses and a draw, and reports in England have suggested the enigmatic owner might attempt to poach Jonny Wilkinson from Newcastle to boost his playing stocks. Boudjellal's ire has also apparently been raised by Sonny Bill Williams's latest injury drama.
The former Bulldog scored a try on debut against Clermont in the first round of the Top 14, but sustained a hairline leg fracture in Toulon's next match - a 3-3 draw with last-placed Brive, described by Boudjellal as "shameful".
Sources in southern France suggest Umaga has headed back to New Zealand, for family reasons, but the imminent arrival of Connolly has thrown serious doubt as to whether he will return. When contacted by the Herald last night, Boudjellal denied approaching Connolly, saying only, "there is no problem [with Umaga]".
Boudjellal was similarly coy during his covert courtship of Williams, denying his club had made any contact with the former NRL star until the eve of his first training appearance at the Stade Ange Siccardi.
The departure of Umaga would be a tremendous blow for Williams. The former All Blacks enforcer scouted the 23-year-old during the winter, and convinced Boudjellal to part with a reported $1.5 million a season to secure his services. Umaga has mentored Williams since his arrival.
A Toulon spokesperson last night gave no indication as to a possible return date for Williams, stating only that he "continues his strength training and working in the pool".

The Bulldogs will take him back. They're like Liz Hurley or even Hilary Clinton...they'll swallow his whore-dabbling, and get on with life. They're spooners now, and they wont be doing much without him. Just like a 94 Hurley or a 98 Hilary.

Remember the 111 lineouts in that 1963 Five Nations game we were ribbing alfie about...

And that was more exciting than the 0-0 draw the same year in the same tournament. lol

3-3 is "exceptionally exciting rugger" (that gave me a thrill just saying it).
