Gallop's view on juniors

The rule shouldn't be local juniors. Clubs could recruit their juniors from anywhere. Just so long as they develop the players themselves.

Which is why I don't understand the bad rep Roosters constantly get. The majority of our top 17 have been developed by us.

i have said they should be moved countles times

Roosters and Sea Eagles should be forced to do so too. especially seeing what's recently happened at both clubs with the Roosters pissing off what little juniors they have left and Manly pulling out of the NSW cup and instead entering a team in the Queensland cup[/quo

So what do we do when demographics continue to change in parramatta (who have had major declines in junior levels over the last 20 years) and then it hits penrith etc...do we ship them out too?

If it wasn't for clubs starting this comp 100 hundred years ago then we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

The juniors have dried up throughout the sydney region over the last 50 yeasr as demographics change. Souths will continue to decline! Balmain have not many years left and parra has halved in the last 20 years.

Just because demographics changed in the eastern part of sydney (as they will all over) doent mean we don't need a team there taking it to the swans and tahs.We can't just leave it for them.At least easts are reasonably fiancial and they will be spending a bucket on a new league academy in SW sydney which will benefit all teams.

what are your defiitions of majority and developed?

majority, most, considerably more than half (i counted 12 out of our top 17 which made their FG debut with us, earlier in this thread). Developed, put work into players in lower grades to make them into first grade standard.

More kids getting into league
Article from: The Daily Telegraph

By David Barrett

September 09, 2008 12:00am

IT'S a battle played out in schoolyards across Sydney's west every day - rival footy codes fighting for the young hearts and minds of tomorrow's sport stars.

As the AFL struggles to save face after last weekend's poor turnout at the Swans' match against North Melbourne, new figures reveal a record numbers are joining the ranks of junior rugby league in western Sydney.

Figures obtained by The Daily Telegraph reveal a 4 per cent rise in the number of club-registered players from Parramatta to Penrith.

The NRL figures show a total of 20,343 registered junior and senior players took to the field for 1497 teams in 2008, up from a total of 1298 teams in 2007.

Despite attempts from the AFL to entice youngsters, the number of junior and senior league teams has risen 15.3 per cent across Sydney's west in the years 2000-2007.

The AFL will also have to fight the rising popularity of soccer, with high numbers of juniors joining teams across western Sydney.

"Football (soccer) has the highest participation among the codes for boys aged five to 14 in the country," Football Federation Australia spokeswoman Bonita Mersiades said.

"That would apply to Sydney's west as well."

But as the codes battle to attract new youngsters on to the field, Year 6 students Angad Roy, Daniel Norden and Johnny Tzortzopoulos already had their hearts set on their favourite brands of footy, which they play with mates in the schoolyard each day. "There is a lot of rivalry in the playground," Angad, 12, said.

Grand finals success
BY PAUL HAIGH
17/09/2008 10:28:00 AM
THE curtain has been drawn on another highly successful season in the Parramatta District Junior Rugby League.

Grand finals in junior and senior age groups were played at Marconi Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

Parramatta District Junior Rugby League executive officer Terry Rose said the 2008 season has been one of further consolidation for the game.

``The participant clubs are to be congratulated for contributing to making the game strong and successful in all age groups,'' Rose said.

``There has been a lot of hard work from the junior league executive, the participant clubs, players, officials, coaches and the supporters, making it such a success.

``Seven years ago, while our player registration numbers were healthy and we had 3800 on the books, that number has swelled to 6200 in 2008.

``We have 22 clubs and teams from under 6 through to A grade

``There has been a lot of hard work put in by many people to make the season work so well.''

Eight of the 22 clubs are Fairfield-district based, they are, Cabra Vale Diggers (CVD) Cobras, Cabramatta, Fairfield United, Fairfield Patrician Brothers, Mounties, Canley Vale Kookaburras, Canley Heights Dragons and Marconi Mustangs.

Marconi Mustangs were formed several years ago and are one of the new breed of clubs, proving to be thoroughbreds in the sport.

Marconi have 16 teams and the club is thriving and growing all the time in player numbers.

Rose said the introduction Marconi has proved a winner.

``Marconi has proved in a short time a new and emerging rugby league stronghold,'' he said.

``Hosting the grand finals on Saturday and Sunday was a very big success.

``We had more than 2000 people come through the gates on Saturday and very good turnout for Sundays matches.''

Rose said Marconi is traditionally known as a soccer organisation but the Mustangs have gallop quickly to prominence.

He said the punt taken to introduce rugby league to youngsters of Marconi and the Fairfield district has proved a winner. ``The club is well administered and Marconi Stadium is a perfect venue for footy as you can play and day and night games there,'' Rose said.

Grand final results from Saturday and Sunday at Marconi Stadium: Under 16 third divisions: Merrylands 22 d Parra Jnr Eels 20; under 16, second division: Wenty (2) 26 d Mounties 22; under 17, second division: Guildford (2) 11 def Hills District (2) 10; under 15 division one: Fairfield United 19 d Cabramatta 18; under 16 first division: Hills District (1) 18 d All Saints 6; under 17 first division one: Cabramatta 26 d Wentworthville (1) 12; C grade second division: CVD Cobras 14 d Merrylands 10; C grade first division: Wentworthville 16 d Cabramatta (2) 10; A grade third division: Lalor Park 34 d Merrylands(2) 10; A grade second division: Rouse Hill 22 d All Saints Toongabbie 16.

You are assuming that the area has to have its own NRL team for juniors to exist? Plenty of areas have strong junior development progrmas without an NRL team. If there were only 2 NRL teams in the West there is no reason juniors need be any different (for example)

Clubs can pump as much money as they like into juniors, but if they have a small area or number of kids to work with they won't be able to compete.

Some of you need to realise we are playing a professional sport here, how many successful sports around the world completely rely on local juniors.

It's up to clubs to prioritise their juniors, show them that they are wanted at the club and most often they stay. Not every junior can be kept by clubs.

Here here....I am sure Alex Ferguson is sitting at home as we speak thinking "we should have more Manchester kids in our team"!!

I cant see why it matters where the juniors come from as long as the club has a good development plan and looks after them professionally.

Tommax , you are kidding re David Williams, played junior reps fopr Parra from Matthews to NYC, was offered terms but took the cash at the Beagles.

So you want to claim 1 season games againsty 7 years of development, think you might be stretching it a bit

David Williams is 22.... NYC started this year as an U20s competition. SO you are wrong.

Secondly, Parra offered him nothing after a series of injuries. He was playing Hills District A-Grade when Manly picked him up.

I think you are meaning Tony Williams who has signed to Manly this year for next season.

Because Soccer has the entire globe to pick players from!

The ESL rely on getting players from us, and if we go down the same path as them (like Roosters, Manly etc) we'll be stuffed.

The craziest thing is that Clovelly , a Roosters junior club is the fastest growing rugby league club in Australia

They are the second biggest club in the SSJRLFC now.. The Roosters 4 junior clubs now have over 1000 kids playing as opposed to about 450 not many years ago.

Anyone that thinks the Roosters don't develop players are dead set clueless.

Many of the 16 -19 year olds are given accommodation, part time work, are put through courses etc. If this isn't developing players I don't know what is. As mentioned earlier in this thread, there are many Roosters players that have gone through this system.

true. just look how many have played for other clubs

1 Mini -developed by Easts
2 Mossy -played with Penrith, Dragons
3 Soli - developed by Easts
4 Pez - developed by East
5 SKD - developed by Easts
6 Anasta -played with dogs
7 Pearce - developed by Easts
8 Ogre -played with dogs, bears, northern eagles
9 Jaubs -played with storm, but developed at Easts prior to that
10 Lopini -developed by Easts
11 Mase -played with dogs
12 Nate - played with dogs
13 Fitzy - played with dragons, steelers

14 FPN -developed by Easts
15 Shackleton/Cherrington -both developed by Easts
16 Maubs/Sa - bothdeveloped by Easts
17 Friend/RoryK -both developed by Easts

Just seven have represented another NRL club at first grade. The others have been developed by Easts. Looking at other clubs, they have more foreigners in their team. The Warriors for example. All of NZ as a junior base, but Price, Tate, McKinnon, Witt, Fien, Henderson have played elsewhere. For next year, you can add Lilyman, Foran, Moon and Kemp to that list. Thats a lot of players not developed by them.

and souffs. We hear all about their big junior base but Vagana, Hegarty, Kidwell, Widders, Asotasi, Ndaira, J Smith, J Lowe all didn't start there, while Wing and Merritt were from souffs but played elsewhere before rejoing.

Easts don't look too bad then
