David Gallop says second NRL team in south-east Queensland on cards

A Perth team would also give us added flexibility with timeslots

How good would it be to have the a team running around in Perth 4pm Sunday kick-off over there for a 6pm kick-off in NSW. Create another Sunday TV game and a "day" game at that.

Perth, 2nd Bris, NZ Sth Island and Central Coast. C'mon Gallop let them all in and may the strongest survive. If a couple of teams (in this 20-team comp) happen to die or merge then so be it.

Takes me back to 95.

I read something in RLW about a CENTRAL Queensland bid to join the comp with Gary Larson and Jason Hetherington leading the charge...

Froma players point of view I think we can, especially if big emphasis is placed on new areas developing new players. Also the massive amopunt playing in SL (and there is a lot of quality over there).

Corporate $'s would be the biggest challenge and the game would really need to move to another level to get a profile of the AFL in terms of corporate support. Fan base is the other biggie and the game needs to work much harder to get memberships and bums on seats but again alot of that is to do with the profile of the sport and the publics perception of the game.

I think 20 is definitely the right number
The ARL had it oh so close to right in 95.

1995
Auckland
Brisbane
Canberra
Cronulla
Gold Coast
Illawarra
Manly
Newcastle
Norths
Nth QLD
Parramatta
Penrith
Bulldogs
Roosters
Tigers
Sth QLD
Souths
St George
Western Reds
Wests

Compared to what I hope for (2018 or so?)
NZ
Brisbane
Canberra
Cronulla
Gold Coast
StG-Illawarra
Manly
Melbourne
Newcastle
Central Coast Bears
Nth QLD
Parramatta
Penrith
Bulldogs
Roosters
Wests Tigers
Souths
Perth Reds
Sth QLD
Wellington

The only differences to 95 in my ideal comp are Wellington and Melbourne in exchange for the 2 mergers, Norths to the CC, and overall good crowds and financial stability :p

Definitely should be a 20-team comp. I would also look long-term at teams based in Darwin, Adelaide, PNG, and possibly Central Qld or Redcliffe/Sunny Coast. This would be facilitated by either relocation or merger of Sydney clubs. However, unlike Superjoke which tried to force mergers and relocations down our throat, it should happen by natural attrition. The problem will be finding two Sydney clubs that don't hate each others guts. The mergers that makes sense geographically (Souths-Easts, Parramatta-Penrith, Parramatta-Bulldogs) would fail due to the bitter hatred between these clubs (cf. Norths-Manly). One option perhaps would be Easts-Cronulla (Sydney Sharks anyone?).

Couldn't find Ipswich or Logan with a cut-lunch or a compass? I'd challenge 75% of Qlders to find the Central Coast or the Illawarra with a cut-lunch or compass.

Logan= basically Los Angeles in Australia. Nothing but shopping malls, freeways, service stations, factories and fast-food joints.

Ipswich= evidence as to why the atomic bomb should never be destroyed.

You forgot the masses of Bogans in both locales. ;-)

In Perth it tends to people from the Northern burbs support Eagles and the Sth Dockers. Middle and upper class workers Eagles, working class Dockers. If another Brisbane team came in would there be a similair split in the city ie do the Broncos currently draw their fan base from a particular area of the city and/or socio demographic and would a new team be able to draw from another part not currently supporting the Broncos?

NRL are obviously taking the low risk approach, bring on the Crushers/Jets and the Bears. Only good thing is that eventually (the next negotiation of TV rights) all that leaves is Perth and Adelaide/NZ. We just have to wait longer. Unless a few Sydney teams merge or move. Common Rooters, for the good of the game.

Problem is next expansion isn't likely to be for 9 years! I'd hate to think how RU would have taken over RL clubs, jnrs and general acceptance as the "rugby" for Perth in that time period unless we have an NRL team.

ps please stop lumping Perth and Adelaide together, we are years ahead of Adelaide in terms of planning, players and readiness for an NRL team.

No I lugged NZ and Adelaide together. Perth is the most deserving but unfortunately the reality is that they are probably third in the list. It's too much risk without the support of tv networks. If NRL sold tv rights for Perth separate than it would pay for itself i reckon.

yipppeee, another NSW and Q'land team. RL's ambitions know no boundaries (well only geographical ones!)

i understand your frustration, but as things get closer to the date, its increasingly looking like that in order to maximise how much money the game gets, it will need to sow up the brisbane market. A game out of suncorp each week is going to make the nrl more valuable - full stop.

Ofcourse, central coast team is going to make things better too. I can see why they are trumpeting that.

For mine, i think we need to goto perth now. For its future growth potential. But hey, i could be wrong on the immediacy of that. Maybe perth is not an immediate requirement. We may be better served with shoring up qld and the central coast.

I still wish we went to perth though. I think it would provide many now-intangible benefits. Ones we would not realise until some years along...whether this is outweighed by the extra money we would get elsewhere, who knows. The nrl might. But just think, if perth got interested in league there is another market to take tests, etc.

To be fair Gallop didn't say anything we haven't known for the last couple of years. They're keeping an eye on the massive growth area in Brisbane's west. The rest is speculation by a QLD RL journo.

you see the area west of sydney.

Thats brisbane in the next 20 years. If you take a drive out there now, there is massive infrastructure improvements happening and a whole heap of construction.

It will be gigantic. Brisbane will be australias second largest city in a matter of decades. If you don't have more teams there, you'll be crying...

Maybe the nrl are playing their cards close to their chest about perth; maybe gallop and the board dont know a whole lot about perth just now, as they are still researching, so they are not talking about it. How does anyone know? But we know perth will be a massive benefit, just like Melbourne is.

It's all about shoring up proven markets and securing revenue before taking the more risky options of spreading to Perth or a second team in New Zealand.

I could live with the Reds not getting in the next expansion round as long as the NRL came out with a clear development plan for the game here. If they said we will ensure FTA coverage at a decent time, we will ensure 3 NRL games a year are played in Perth and we will give the WARL seed funding of $1mill a year to further develop the Reds and improve jnr development with a probable entry of the WA Reds in 2016-17 then that would be ok.
Instead we will go wth the softest options, WA will be left to wither AGAIN and come 2015 we will be starting all over again.

The games biggest revnue is tv money. How will another team in brisbane make that more lucrative? Its not a new market.

I can't see how Perth will miss out on a team in 2012. They are the perfect expansion team.

- Largest city without a football team.
- A decent stadium already there (and about to get upgraded).
- The grassroots support is already there.
- Will bring in a new market .: increaasing the tv deal/sponsors in the game/people playing and watching the game.

The WA Reds are already doing the work for the NRL in getting the place ready for the NRL. If the NRL ignore them now we might never get another chance like this again.
