CRONULLA forward Reni Maitua has tested positive to a banned substance and is poised to be stood down by the NRL.
In another black eye for the code, the former Kangaroos lock tested positive to the substance during a routine Australian Sports Drug Agency test about three weeks ago.
It is understood the drug has been identified as Clenbuterol, a stimulant which has been used by athletes to improve muscel mass and reduce body fat.
Clenbuterol is not approved for human use in Australia and is also banned under the Olympic
Movement's World Anti-Doping Code Prohibited Classes of Substances and Prohibited Methods.

The Daily Telegraph understands Cronulla chief executive Tony Zappia will meet Maitua’s agent Sam Ayoub and legal counsel in the city before a press conference is held later tonight.

The NRL has been informed of the positive test.

Maitua joined Cronulla at the beginning of the year after being sacked from the Bulldogs over a long history of off-field indiscretions.

Gonskis, two year stand down I'd expect.

Should add another year just for being so dumb, imo...

It's something the Sharks definitely didn't need. It's a ready made excuse for any sponsors that were wavering about rugby league, the sharks, or in this economic climate in general.

The Sharks can't take many more hip pocket hits like the one Reni's behaviour has dealt them. Latu, Bird, Seymour, the 2002 Christchurch fallout, and now Reni... all coming down in the space of 18 months or so? Not to mention they are playing like sh*t and have a sh*t coach.

I don't think they'll get by in the next two years without a funded full relocation... Adelaide Sharks has a nice $8mil ring to it, have one back to Endeavour Field home game per year and enter a Shire Sharks team in the NSW Cup to keep the presence up.

They'll end up in Adelaide for certain IMO...but I can see them selling to a private owner. Sell the club and assets, the owner utilises the land near the stadium and knocks down the stadium to use that land for whatever purpose (apartments, mall, whatever)...that'd net them a fair penny IMO, plus the relocation money

I really don't see Adelaide as a viable option. It's not even close to first cab off the rank for RL expansion and any team relocating would be mad to go there instead of CC, Sth Qld, Perth or Wellington.

Having said that, the only effect this could have on such a decision is if it causes more sponsors to pull out and/or makes it harder for them to attract new ones. For no other reason will this have an impact on Cronulla's viability as an NRL franchise.

I'm not really sold on Adelaide either at this stage from what I've seen of it, but it just seems to be the first one that is thrown around in league circles (and even by the NRL at times) with regards to relocation. Probably because it doesn't have a bidding package of it's own, as Perth or the Central Coast do, hence it seems earmarked as the logical choice for some reason. If anything, I'd be looking for the Sharks to relocate as the next QLD side, personally. The Sunshine Coast Sharks has a very nice ring to it.

As for the Maitua issue, this may well be the straw that breaks the camels back in terms of sponsors. LG especially are widely reported as being close to pulling the plug after the Bird saga, then the crap that was dug up regarding Johns et al, and this may be the final nail in that particular coffin. And if they lose a major sponsor, watch other sponsors flee like rats on the Titanic...it could get ugly quite quickly, because at the moment losing that million dollar LG deal alone would probably sink the club, let alone any other sponsors that jump ship at the same time.

HJ, once in my life i agree with you.

Adelaide is a terrible option and idea, better off with either Central Coast, WA or even Wellington.

The South Australian or "Southern" Sharks sounds good. Another area looking for an NRL team is Rockhampton. They would also need a decent ground as Browne Park, I don't think is up to the riggors of Weekly NRL usage. Indeed they are looking to Bid, But Re-locating the Sharks to SA works to expand the footprint. If they can do somethink akin to what the Swans have done in Sydney over the long haul then all the better for the game and "National" Exposure instead of the North East Coast's game.

Sharks to Rockhampton or Sunshine Coast, either would be great for me only a 2hr drive to see Parra bring it on
