Cronulla Sharks - Bailouts

Can someone tell me what years Cronulla went broke, and why the NSWRL bailed them out? (Was it twice?)

Would you expect the NRL to bail them out if they continue to be in financial difficulty in the next few years? Afterall the scum was bailed out by the NSWRL then joined traitor league - ended up surviving suspect criteria when they offered SFA. Five foundation clubs got the flick and they survived. They are more scum than Manly.

I wasn't going to lay the boot in, but you should stick to the facts. The Sharks were propped up by the NSWRL, and received handouts from the ARL and SL as well.

• In 1983, after the Sharks had run into debt, the NSWRL stepped in and provided a loan.
• In 1993, Cronulla went into receivership, with the ARL bailing them out.
• In 1995, the lure of dollars saw them jump ship and join Super League.
• In 2004, former coach John Lang declared, "The Sharks have no influence and no money. They have spent half their history staving off bankruptcy... some seasons have been a success just to exist."

And let's not talk about Geoffrey Edelsten... actually, let's talk about that, the day club officials tried to sell the team to a media portrayed snake oil salesman.

In 1986, medico-gad-about-town Geoffrey Edelsten and his blonde sidekick Leanne tried to buy the Sharks. The club rolled out the red carpet, only to be blocked by the NSWRL.

Why are Norths fans annoyed that their club was booted to make way for a wonderful club like Cronulla?

Especially after all the good press they have brought the NRL this year, combined with 4 decades of success. A good trade for 3 foundation clubs.

Remember it well - all Leanne wanted was a pink helicopter and the Sharks. And remember Gavin Miller handing her the flowers on TV - Cleary summed it up very accurately.

One person I felt sorry for was Monty Porter - an honourable administrator who must have thought long and hard about getting involved. Have heard that Monty is in extremely poor health these days and is not doing too well at all.
