WORST:
- Bit of a long one. I'd just been at the gym, and rushed home to grab my gear for footy training. Came in the house and mum told me my little brother(15 years old) had something to tell me and I said I didn't have time, but mum said it was pretty important. So I said fine but make it quick. Of course my little brother(who takes an hour to tell a story with every minute detail included) rambled on for about 30 seconds about what he'd done that morning and I cut him short, "can you hurry up, I'm late". Then he said "the doctor says I have cancer". It hit me like a smack in the face but I didn't really know how to react at first. I asked mum to explain it to me and she said it was an aggressive type B lymphoma behind his eye and he started chemo in four days.
I drove to training with no radio on in my car(which I never do) in silence, then when I got to the ground I parked the car and just sat there for about an hour, not able to cry(never been much of one), but everything inside me was crying. I will never forget wondering what was wrong with me that I couldn't cry. I did eventually, but it was a couple of months later.
- When my best friend told me his family was moving to Melbourne at the end of year 10. We were the tightest friends you could imagine, and I'll never have anything like that again.
- A couple of other things that are probably a bit too personal.
BEST:
- A couple of kisses come to mind, even though in hindsight some of them were bittersweet.
- Big Day Out this year in Sydney. I went with my aforementioned friend from Melbourne and a few of his mates I'd only met the night before. The day was f**king awesome, and by the end of it it felt like I'd been lifelong friends with all of them, just a great bunch of guys. At the end of the day, going into the last act which was Groove Armada in the Boiler Room, we all decided to see if we could pickup on the dancefloor. I did, and 4 months on am still with the girl and couldn't be happier. 40,000 people there that day and we met, not sure whether it was the luckiest moment of my life or fate.
- An ex who crushed me begging me back, and me telling her to shove it. So satisfying...
- Champagne breakfast on the last day of school with everyone in the year at a park in Milsons Point. Then walking across the Harbour Bridge to school and sitting in the final assembly drunk as a skunk. Someone threw up
- A couple of heroic sporting memories. Starring me of course.
- When my brother beat cancer, and life turning back to normality.
