A Dragons fan who died after being subdued by police and hit with a baton was a "gentle giant" who had drunk just two or three beers following his team's NRL grand final victory, his twin brother said.
Steve Bosevski said his twin, Steven Bosevski, 35, and their younger brother, Tony Bosevski, were celebrating with a group of friends at St George Leagues Club at Kogarah last night but were not drunk.
"None of us were drunk, we were just having a good time, we were just celebrating with everybody else," Mr Bosevski said.
He said he could not go into detail about what happened at the bar or during the altercation because he had not yet given a statement to police.
But he was adamant his brother was not drunk and had no underlying health problems.
"He'd had two, three beers, that's it", Mr Bosevski said.
"He's a gentle giant, did no harm to nobody and he's gone, he's gone now, for no reason whatsoever.
"We're just confused, we don't understand what happened."
All three brothers live with their parents and sister in Bardwell Valley, Mr Bosevski said.
Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch, commander of the Central Police Region, told a press briefing today that he had watched CCTV footage of the incident.
He said Mr Bosevski was struck with a police baton during the altercation. He did not say where he was hit.
Capsicum spray was also used and a number of people were affected, including Mr Bosevski, who died in St George Hospital early today.
"This is a tragedy all round, obviously for the family, for St George Football Club and for the police involved," Mr Murdoch said.
