How to lose a preliminary final, Paul Carige style....

Carige gets castrated because he wasn't a big name, a media darling. As someone said, Slater was just as mud in the WC final but you can't put too much sh*t on the back of Billy the Kid.

So this guy gets thrown under a bus for a play which actually was the ref's fault, not his, a couple of catches of the ball where he may not have known where he was in relation to the touchline (and his side were down anyway) and whatever the other one is.

The kick down to Polla-Mounter, fair enough. But it didn't cost them the game (almost did, but didn't)

Feel sorry for the fella. Hope he doesn't have the internet.

I was thinking more that even the best ref from the ARL (David Manson) wasn't even offered a contract in the new NRL, but pretty much every SL ref was looked after; the drugs raid halfway through the season which, strangely enough, only targeted the ARL clubs, just when Newcastle were looking as if they were a chance at challenging the Broncos for the title. I wonder why none of the Superleague teams were targetted at all? As for the Bulldogs, what about Steve Clark's caning of St George in week 1 of the finals? Something smelt fishy to me...

According to Webcke's book he was caught.... but a quick sweep sweep and everything was better again.

the kick back was odd.
the other stuff was either unlucky for him or masterful from the dogs.
He doesn't attempt to catch the ball and anything could have happened.

poor bastard had a bad day....but not as bad as they made out.

I think Hodges had a worse one a few SOO's ago.

i think he still managed to win though.

 Ah yes, Hodgo's Origin debut. Whenever I hear a Queenslander rattling on about how "We never bag our own", I always remember the backlash he got after that one.

Where is the "How to lose a world cup" article about billy the kid's efforts in 2008?

Slater's impact on that game was far more than Carige's IMO
How much was AUS up by when Billy "lost the cup"? Oh, they were down you say? And lost by more than 2 converted trys? Of course you dont say that, coz that would make you sound like the idiot you are:crazy:

LMFAO waaaahhh....You were the fake premiers in 97 and it was proved in 98.

:? There was only one competition in 1997- the ARL Optus Cup. There was this News Limited in-house competition, but nobody recognises that one much. It has a * next to it for good reason.

How many were parra up by when Carige stuffed up? They were down as well genius.

He also did not let in any of the tries himself, and all of his errors parra had the opportunity to defend.

Slater just handed them an insurmountable lead on a platter, while also bombing a couple tries by throwing passes into the 4th row IIRC earlier in the game.

Choked big time

did anyone even watch the stupid league competition? it was a farce of a competition.

ask anyone who won the 97 grandfinal and they will say the knights.

stupid league is only remembered for the blight it was on the game.

Didnt the knights beat the reigning premiers in 1997? the dominant team of that era in Manly (3 GF in a row). How's that 'fake'.

Because the Raiders were in the News Limited 'Subscribe to Foxtel!' (TM News Ltd. 1997) Cup and some of their fans are still in denial.

In the reserve grade grand final it was parra vs dogs in the decider. Remarkably it was a repeat of the previous week with parra losing in the last 10min when up something like 22-6. So awesome.

How to lose a Grand Final Jamie Ainscough Style?

Also was it Mundine who dropped it over the line?

I wouldnt lump that one on Ainscough though.

What he did was pretty stupid but it shouldnt have occured if Mundine had of looked to his left and passed the ball instead of being the hero and dropping it.

there were a few ref errors in both of those incidents

1- with the mundine one , the storm knocked on first did mundine get an advantage , yes he should have passed it , i dont think he took the advantage of the storm knock on

Imo should have been a dragons scrum feed

Love how you edited the second part Gaba, cos it was simply not true.

The touch judge in question, Col White, was the referees coach in the Wests junior league when i started to ref.

I even asked him about it and he said the decision was correct. There was no offside.

the touch judge stood his ground he didnt follow the play , you can see he was talking into his flag

Yeah....that was when a Bulldogs player scored a try, then starts a fight.....and then somehow the Bulldogs recieve an 8-point try because of it. In the final minutes too.

Garbage decision.

I think the reason Carige cops it more than some others is because he was a bit of a tard in general. That just happened to the game where he showed it the most. Whereas Terry Lamb and the like were good players who just had one bad moment. At least two of those four stuff-ups from Carige were really bad mistakes in a big game. Didn't he also have a shocker in a game against Newcastle where Joey bombed the crap out of him. I know he did it to Schifcofske once but I seem to remember Carige struggling in a game too.

He was no tard.

In fact, it was only two weeks earlier when he had a terrific game against the Broncos to help the Eels earn their place in the Prelim.

He just had a bad day against the Dogs.

The initiative, dolly, the initiative. Think about that I word rather than insurmountable.

As was said, none of Carige's errors led directly to points.
