Lineal Rankings System
These are the official Rankings at the moment.

Now, I am going to start witht these rankings and attempt to update them, as we go, to give an indication of how the various sides rank. If you beat a side, you will climb over the top of that side. In other words, If Wales was to beat England, they would become the third best side, England the 4th, PNG the 5th and so on. I think it might be an interesting way to help order some of the lower ranked teams or at least see whether or not it works. If a game is drawn, then a side can move level with the side they draw with, but will not overtake them and will move one place down the ladder. If new sides play a game, they will be ranked at the bottom of the list, unless they win or draw.

1 Australia 1,240.02
2 New Zealand 1,062.30
3 England 682.19
4 PNG 330.24
5 France 250.03
6 Samoa 159.50
7 Wales 149.17
8 Fiji 145.85
9 Tonga 129.01
10 Scotland 91.01
11 Ireland 72.81
12 Cook Islands 62.11
13 USA 59.67
14 Serbia 43.51
15 Italy 42.21
16 Lebanon 40.76
17 Germany 34.52
18 Norway 32.04
19 Russia 28.44
20 Malta 26.46
21 Canada 21.91
23 Latvia 19.55
24 Ukraine 19.12
25 Czech Republic 14.27
26 Jamaica 13.78
27 South Africa 11.85
Unranked - Alphabetical Order
unranked Denmark -
unranked Hungary -
unranked India -
unranked Indonesia -
unranked Japan -
unranked Kingdom of Saudi Arabia -
unranked Morocco -
unranked Netherlands -
unranked Pakistan -
unranked Palastine -
unranked Philippines -
unranked Singapore -

I will be counting games at all levels (whether youth games, Residents only games, PMXIII games, 9 aside or whatever). So long as their results are mentioned somewhere on LU, so that i can update it.

If anyone else is interested enough to update the table with results, feel free, but please write the result and name of the game to avoid any confusions.

So, what games are there this weekend that might affect the rankings?

May have had some legs if you only included full international games and not development games.

Youth games would be a problem I think - and wouldn't add much anyway.

This weekend its Canada v South Africa

Next weekend things get a lot busier!

Interesting. Number 27 vs Number 21. I find it hard to believe that South Africa should be ranked that low. I sense that we will see a new Number21, although i think it will be an unpopular pick on here.

That's because they never play anyone else.

You probably are right, but i thought they toured Europe or Italy or somewhere like that not so long ago. And i was sure one of the home nations residence sides toured there also.

This is actually the advantage of the system i am suggeting here. There is an advantage to playing more often, but you still have to actually improve on the field and you dont lose your ranking just because you concentrate on home development rather than somewhere else. I accept the point raised earlier about incuding exhibitions and such forth and i may even change it, depending on how things work out, but i think this is a much better system than any points ranking system, for the game of rugby league.

Bender they've fixed the ratings. If you look at the list there's no no. 22. They left out Sweden which is now the 27th nation.

South Africa did tour Italy - but that would be too long ago for these ratings. Their most recent foray up North played BARLA selections which wouldn't show up on the ratings but which was more realistic in terms of getting their lads competitive fixtures against born-and-bred RL players. At home recently its been the same - against BARLA, British Army and Aussie Student teams.

I suspect that's been a good realistic attitude on the part of the Rhinos. Will it have been enough to make them competitive against Canada. I suspect the Canadians are better players but the Rhinos have a bit more RL experience. Should be interesting - I'll go for Canada on home advantage.

Thanks, i edited the original post.

So this week we see no 22 now squaring off with no 21. It should give us a good close match, but i am fairly confident that we will see south africa win quite comfortably. I think they are still a bit underated. Their domestic set up is very underated, imo, and it will help them win comfortably against Canada i think.

You were right Bender - the South Africans took it.

USA v South Africa
Scotland v Ireland
Australia v New Zealand
England Knights v France (not a full international - but interesting)

So Bender, are you doing this as an alternative to the RLIF ranking system, or did you not realise they they will update the rankings at the end of every month (unless the end of the month falls in the middle of an international series, then they will be updated as soon as the series is completed)?

Using this system, say NZ beat Australia and then England beat NZ, England would be first and Australia third?

South Africa's win over Canada would now put them in 21st spot.

Updated now, by the two results posted in this thread. I am having a second thought about including junior results. At this stage, i think that we will leave teh juniors results at this stage. For example NZ and Aus played each other but i dont think their rank should really have any bearing on the ranking of Australia and NZ. I can see arguments for other nations results being included, but i think at this stage, i will leave them out and see how things work.

By way of comment, on what has happened so far, i do think that Norway are overranked at the moment, and as a result so now are Denmark. But i expect in time over the next couple of years, SA and Canada will both fix that.

Here are the latest rankings. To me, South Africa and Jamaica seems a little underated, but time should fix that up. Looking at the rankings, Ireland vs Wales seems the pick of this weekends matches.
