Question: is this development intended to be an asset to the community or is it simply to keep the Sharks afloat? I get a lot of mixed feelings from it, Sharks fans obviously see this as the be all or end all of their club but how do local residents who don't necessarily support the Sharks feel about it?

A Liberal opposing Infrastructure progression, who'dve thunk et eh?

If the Cronulla Sharks aren't dead before the end of 2012, I will be very shocked.

This is the funniest part of the article.

....He believes the overall public opinion has been negative. That's completely false. Everyone we’re talking to has been supportive of the idea. At the very least it’s about 60-40 in favour of it...."

I am a local resident and I support it. The immediate neighbors to this is a Toyota factory, a petrol station and a golf course and it is situated on a four lane divided road. The nearest house is hundreds of meters away.

The info on the development can be viewed at www.infoonsharks.com

Other factors to consider is that the population of woolooware (where I live) has actually declined over the last 4 years by a couple of percent a year and woolooware has one of the highest percentages of green space per square meter of ANY suburb in Sydney. We all know Sydney is bursting at the seams, and places like this are going to have to do their share in absorbing the growth.

Speakman is having a bet each way. He knows the dev will go through, so he is siding with a vocal minority to look like he is community minded. The grub will be there to cut the ribbon.

Council have the shits because they have been taken out of the equation as this is a part 3a application (state gov, not council) and they wanted to make the final determination. In fact, in 2009 they released a report stating that in order to deal with the growing population of the shire, this foreshore area was prime for development and height restrictions and density guidelines should be relaxed!

Mark Speakman is correct and I am pleased he has spoken out against this proposal.

It is a massive overdevelopment of the site which is completely out of character with neighbouring suburbs.

It has the potential to impact terribly on local businesses in Cronulla, North Woolooware, Caringbah and Miranda.

The developer's view that the Government can pay for the upgrades to roads and other infrastructure once it is built reeks of arrogance.

Don't fall for the emotional blackmail being peddled by the Club. It is not the end of civilisation if the Sharks fold. Many other fine clubs have gone already and a second Brisbane team is long overdue.

Reality check.
Out of character with the neighbouring suburbs:lol::lol:High rise Caringbah high rise Cronulla, high rise Miranda/Gymea/Kirrawee/Sutherland,hardly any built with the environment/traffic/or ambience in mind.
Factories near clubhouse and on the edge of the mangroves.Wanda sandhills completely denuded by mining.Sand trucks with double bogies using the CC Drive regularly .Petrol station opposite school near mangroves.Caltex Oil Refinery and desal plant and other factories there. The bleeding shire was tainted decades ago ,before any Sharks development proposal.
Yet the anti development mob rears its head, and were nowhere to be seen years ago in any numbers:hypocrits.

Cronulla shopping centre absolutely chockers, chasing a parking spot,is like trying to get a date with Liz Hurley.
Local businesses !!! A supermarket to be built where the nearest is Caringbah shopping centre, medical facilities sorely needed, entertainment place for kids sorely needed.Improvement to the mangrove area ,sorely needed.
And affordable quality accommodation sorely neede, plus jobs for our kids.
Many of the small local shops derive benefit from the fans who attend games during the day matches and the juniors. They lose this they lose the patronage.
I live at Caringbah and have done so for years and prior to that Cronulla, before Speakman even knew what a politician looked like.I am no Jonny come lately.

Funny old world innit. This is a League site, and some are promoting urban development issues against the wellbeing of a RL club.

Replace "Urban development" with "Rugby Union" and everyone would be screaming "TROLL"!!!!!!

Personally, I dont give a rats about who builds what in the Shire, how it will affect roads or public amenity. They can concrete the whole place and paint it pink for all I care. I do care that Cronulla participates in the comp though. I have lived through enough clubs dying because of stupid agendas and I do not want to experience it again.

Pfft. You think this is bad? Try dealing with Leichhardt Council trying to redevelop the old Balmain Leagues club into a community hub and residential towers.

The Greens worry about the excess traffic it will bring to the area. Its on Victoria Road and they worry about traffic levels raising

Yes you are. You have not mentioned 1 benefit this development will have... do you believe there are any?

Hang on, he was asked to "Please explain what very real characteristics will be ruined", to which he replied with his list.
Which part of his explanation did you expect to list positives?

construction would create a fair amount of jobs in the area for one.

long term a more viable and family friendly club would be able to contribute more to local sporting clubs and charitable organisations without total reliance on poker machine revenue.

and would provide more housing in the area at a variety of levels.

people whinge about the height..which is valid. so they may be able to lop some off. however that would set the project back and by then merkinrag bank may call in the loan.

its already not going to be the huge financial windfall that the club spruiked years ago. however i would hope that if levels were lost off the residential side that the developers would stick to the pre agreed lump sum at the start.

just to give some people on here some idea of how close houses are to the development.
The two 16 story buildings will be to the right of the feild.

That fragile ecosystem that people are up in arms against has an Oil Refinery , desalination plant with under the bays seabed piping .
oh ....and an international airport in it.
Not to mention being one of the busiest wtareways in the country.
As it is now the shoreline is a disgrace. It is filthy.

The development will have outdoor food courts and bars that overlook the bay .
acccom...employment...retail..entertainment.

If the development gets knocked back the bank will sell the land to anyone with the money.
That entire stretch will become factorys.
no ifs ...no buts.
The anti development locals are dreaming if they think the Council will buy the land and turn it into parkland.
It wont happen..100% guaranteed.

Caringbah high rise is all within like 150m of a train station and even then is only about 8 stories. High rise Miranda is really the same, all within that central area around the shops and station. Gymea? Where at Gymea. Theres maybe some 3 stories on the road behind the shops, 100m from a train station but certainly no 16 stories. Same with Kirrawee and then Sutherland is a huge train station and most units are less than 500m away. Again, tallest is probably 4 stories high, nothing near this 16 units.

I understand your whole progress shit, but you want to build 16 stories out in the middle of bum f**k no where. The only places to live within 2km of this place are houses with your big back yard.

Look. It won't fit in with the rest of the Shire, this development. Its far too modern.

And I'm not saying that to be condescending. Its red brick quarter acres down there as far as you can see.

Unleaded petrol and VHS are tipped to be the big thing this coming summer.

I know you are trying to be comical but there is alot of truth in this. I live in the area as a renter. I have saved my ring out for a deposit and want to buy something around the Nth Woolooware/Cronulla region. The area is perfect for me because I surf, I work in the south of Sydney and Ive got a tonne of friends and family around, and I like being able to walk to the games. Sure, its a bit of a basketcase if you want a night out, but Im not adverse to getting on a train or in a cab to go to Newtown or Surry Hills and hit some real pubs.

Problem is, If you get away from the waterfronts (which is where my budget takes me) there are very, very few decent properties available. In terms of infrastructure, there is a massive shortage of supermarkets, medical, and even entertainment for the existing residents, let alone new ones. Sure; the mall has Northies, restaurants and bars but compare them to the rest of Sydney "hot spots" (And I should have some idea, in the last 5 years I have lived in Newtown, Surry Hills and Bondi as well as Woolooware) the area is MILES BEHIND. Parking is a nightmare, service is shocking and the range is tiny.

The sharks development assists in all of these fields AND it helps with the problems of an overcrowded Sydney and this is why it will get through. Sure there are concerns with the heights, but Carchs picture shows the true impact on the "neighbours". Sydney is bursting at the seams. You cant keep lumping people in the extreme west and expecting them to commute, so areas like Woolooware, which are ideal places to live are going to have to shoulder their share of the burden.

* I would like to preface this by saying that YES I am a sharks supporter, but as a local resident my quality of life is my priority and the football team a distant second to my "day to day".

This is the most ridiculous statement of the lot. The existing model of clubs survival is broken. 14 out of 16 clubs run at a loss by depending on the NRL grant, memberships, gate takings, merch and leagues clubs grants and or private ownership. The sharks have come up with a sustainable strategy that works outside this model and will ensure it survives and thrives in the medium and long term. Projects like this should be the benchmark for other clubs, not derided.

What if the development gets up, but is populated by a bunch of people of Middle Eastern appearance? Massive dilemma for Cronulla locals there. Keep the team, or "we grew here, you flew here"

Hmmmmmm....... just wondering about those tall buildings at the top of the photo.

I thought buildings like that were out of character for the area?

I guess the Liberal MP's weren't properly "consulted" about getting this proposal passed.

comparing cronulla mall to the swamp. lol
