I think it is obvious they have got this wrong, especially with USA such a weaker side, having an easier draw to qualify

It was a match in the group stage. Does the soccer world cup have extra time during the group stages? No. If the two top teams are tied then there is no extra time!

Maybe a play-off against USA would have been fairer. Hopefully this won't be a problem next time, a lot more sides should be involved in the qualifying which will hopefully result in a more fair process.
