KANGAROOS five-eighth Johnathan Thurston has labelled touch judges glorified fans, resulting in an invitation to referees headquarters so their roles can be explained.

Thurston's withering attack came from left field yesterday when he was asked about the transition from two referees in the NRL to the international system of one whistle-blower against New Zealand this Saturday.

After offering his support for dual refs at club level, the playmaker continued: ''What are our touch judges doing? Are they doing anything there apart from just putting their flags up?

''They've got to have some influence on the game too. They've got to be looking out if players are onside or if they're offside. It just seems all they're there to do is put their flag up whenever the ball goes over the line.

''They have nothing. What's their influence on the game? They certainly need to help the refs because they can't watch everything, you know? They've got mics and everything. Why can't they be telling the refs who's offside?

''It's just like they're there as a fan watching the game. That's all they're doing. You see players are offside, and refs can't see that. What's the role of the touch judges?''

Thurston has had his run-ins with match officials over the years, and the Cowboys' season ended in rancour with a controversial defeat to Manly in which video refereeing decisions were pivotal.

Referees co-coach Bill Harrigan said players and fans just did not understand what linesmen do.

''If Johnathan or any other player came in on a Monday and sat through one of our debriefs, I think he'd be pleasantly surprised about what they do do,'' Harrigan said.

''The referees do control the game but they are looking for help from their touchies. Fans and players don't hear most of the stuff they say so they aren't aware of it. If anyone had a listen to our audio communications system, they would understand that.''

Australian back-rower Greg Bird offered guarded support for a call from teammate and friend Paul Gallen for the two-referee system to be scrapped.

''I've really enjoyed the way the one-ref situation has worked in Tests over the last few years,'' the Gold Coast player said. ''It's a little bit more free-flowing … I think it helps the game out.

''It's not for me to decide [but] I guess one ref worked for 100 years. Some would say [two] hasn't been working over the last couple.''

After discussing next year's World Cup, Thurston was asked if he would return to North Queensland after the tournament or join another club. He has been linked with Brisbane and Penrith.

''We're not sure about that,'' he said. ''Look, that's still a long way away … I like to deal with it differently. I've got a holiday planned so I don't want to be worrying about that kind of stuff … It's been a pretty big year, and we've got a big year next year, so I want to enjoy my holiday …

''I won't have time to sort it out before I go away but … when we get back I'll start talking to my manager about what's available and what's best for my future.''

Meanwhile, Queensland Rugby League chief executive Rob Moore said a life ban for a junior player accused of stomping on a rival's head was justified as he backed a series of punishments following a wild grand final day in September.

A total of 56 players were banned for one year and a 17-year-old Waterford player was banned for life after allegedly kicking the head of a Redcliffe opponent during the Greater Brisbane Junior Rugby League's grand final day at Wacol, in Brisbane's west, last month.

The incident has called into question the concept of finals for juniors, and is another blow for a game trying to adopt a more professional and family-friendly approach right down to its grassroots level.

great explanation from Harrigan. :roll: did anyone get it? i reckon he doesn't know what they do either.

i've wondered what else touchies do in the modern game too. they barely stick their neck out to make a decision when required. then again, it's the refereeing, referring, and review process that needs to change for the touchies relevance in a game to increase again.

something along the lines of this:
- all decisions on all aspects of the game need to be made by the on the field officials;
- evidence in reviews are required to be conclusive in order to reverse on-field decisions.

this will give all initial adjudicating control to the on-field officials.

reviews:
- implement a challenge system;
- each team starts each game with 3 challenges;
- successful challenges incur no penalties;

penalties (to mitigate frivolous challenges):
- unsuccessful challenges lead to loss of challenge;
- if the unsuccessful challenge was a defending team review of a try, the subsequent re-start kick-off is taken from the kicking team's 20m or 30m line;
- if the unsuccessful challenge was an attacking team's review of a try or any other on-field review, the subsequent re-start is at a pre-determined point up the ground disadvantaging the challenging team.

limitations on challenges are as follows:
- each team can only use 2 challenges max. in the 2nd half (so if a team doesn't use any in the first half, one will expire);
- each team can only use 1 challenge max. in the last 10 mins (so if a team doesn't use any in the first 70mins, then two will expire).

penalties and limitations are required to minimise the use of challenges as tactics to slow down the game.

I find myself asking the same question as JT every game i watch.

They are useless.

Get the ball boys to put the flag up when the ball goes out if thats all the role of the touchie is.

Harrigan is a joke.

They add absolutely nothing.

There was a decision in the finals, I forget which game but maybe it was Manly v Nth Qld, where a player clearly stepped out when the touchie was right behind him and touchie didn't call it and let play go on. Thankfully the team scored and video ref actually got one right because if he gets tackled and they score off the next play it is a major f**k up.

Then with the same play Gus & Rabs praise the touchie for not calling it smh

Even if they are right on top of the action they rarely make a call if it is even moderately important. Personally i'd be happy just to go back to 1 ref and no video ref. F*ck all the fluff and get on with the game. It's never going to happen though.

Touchies: They are side line ornaments with painted on eyes.

We have two Referees one Video Referee…correct.

Here is another question:
Why are the touch judges not called a Sideline Referee?
Doesn’t a Judge have a higher rank than a Referee?
If the touchies are supposed to be assisting the Referee then why don't we call them Assistant Referees?

NRL need to get the titles right before they can define what these pink pelicans actually do.

Who the f**k cares? What idiotic questions. Call them linesmen if you get shitty about names.

And there have been plenty of times where fans have complained about touchies making big calls on supposedly forward passes. In fact I think I remember Thurston blowing up big time about a call like that. I guess he has a short memory, if touchies add nothing the Cowboys would have won the game!

Touch judges traditionally:

- Adjudicate when play has entered touch
- Adjudicate whether conversions or penalty goals are successful
- Watch back play for incidents (if ball is travelling away from them)
- Watch the play in action and assist the referees as to loss balls or forward passes or foul play (if ball is travelling in their direction.
- Assist in determining which chasers are onside from a kick in general play.
- More...

But just like Referees, they have become lazy because they know there is the video ref to fall back on.

Reduce the amount of top level officials (i.e. revert back to one referee) and remove the video ref (and replace with ingoal judges - the touchline officials from Toyota Cup), and watch the standard increase. They will be forced to get into proper position to make decisions.

But I doubt the ARLC will have the balls to make these moves.

My personal favourite.

Jokes aside, touchies are abysmal and if this happened against my team in a GF, I would be bleeding from my eye balls.

- the touchies are guys that want to be ref's but aren't good enough. We think the ref's are sh!t and bag them non-stop. Do we want the guys that got beaten for the top job to have more influence?

-get rid of the video ref and we get more mistakes. Less weird rules but more mistakes. The ref's miss enough important knock ons etc in the middle of the field. Someone suggested that we get the u/20's refs to do the in-goal. They are officiating at something like the 3rd tier of the game and we want to bring them up to the big show and make the big calls on tries?
If fans get dirty at some bad calls now are they going to be able to handle it when we get more bad decisions and especially more bad try calls?

This. Ironic that it's Thurston raising this given his response on that occasion. Dropped the F bomb numerous times as a consequence.

That's okay though, JT's allowed to say whatever he wants to refs/touchies

I've been saying this since the Hayne incident in Origin, if anyone know whether he was in or out, it was the touchie.
Have to laugh at Harrigan's comments. We can hear all that the refs say to each other and you never hear them say a word to the touchies. They barely ever look towards them for a judgement and when they do they just say send it upstairs.
There's some good money to be had obliviously running up and down a straight line.

I bet all the whingers in this thread getting their panties in a knot about touchies not doing anything would be the first up in arms if we gave the touch judges their own whistles and allowed them to make their calls directly instead of by proxy through the referee. Then it'd be all about shutting them up and how their calls are just about seeking the limelight. You know, the same accusations leveled at the guys in the middle today.

What's wrong with confident officials making the right call as it arises?

I bet you sit down to piss.

Should use it as a revenue raising opportunity.

Best seats in the house, give the job to the highest bidder.
