I guess not many here watch Serie A, but those who do will know Crespo (who's pushing 36) is still playing decent football for Parma and has found the net quite a few times recently.

Yep, Crespo has been great this year for Parma. Still as lethal as ever.

Thing is with VDS, he's still world class at 40
The most amazing thing is that this season is arguably his best ever. He's always been one of the best keepers in the world, but this season he's out on his own as being the best.

I wish VDS would reconsider his retirement, but what a way to go out (especially if we can win the CL in his last match - same as we did for Schmeichel).

Is there a 30+ player around right now still breaking football records like Francesco Totti?

He has 6 goals in 15 games this year and is now just 4 goals away from 2nd position in the all time Serie A top scorer charts.

1: Silvio Piola (1929–1954) 274 goals in 537 games
2: Gunnar Nordahl (1948–1958) 225 goals in 291 games
3: Francesco Totti (1992–) 221 goals in 516 games

He just turned 36 in September and is still putting many others to shame.

Most other consistently exceptional players are all under 30, ala Messi, Ronaldo, Falcao, Van Persie etc.

My other favourite 30+ player is Pirlo. I thought, rather foolishly, that this guy was past it heading into the 2011-2012 season. Boy was i wrong.

For starters he doesn't even remotely look like a football player. A beard like a mountain man, and a slight build like an Olympic walker.

And yet he seems to be getting better with age, and would be an automatic selection in my World XI today. His range of passing is extraordinary. And he does it so effortlessly. It says it all that he led Juve to an undefeated season last year.

Im an England fan and yet i took great pleasure in the way he tore apart Roy Hodgson's team in the Euros; kind of like how a French peasant took pleasure in the beheading of Louis XVI. Only sadly it hasn't ushered in a new era of forward thinking English football, with Pirlo being a beacon of light showing us how we SHOULD play the beautiful game.

Better than Xavi? I think so; but only just.

As for Totti, an amazing player. I rate him as one of the top five most complete players of the last 10-15 years. His range of passing, technique, vision, time on the ball, and ability to score from anywhere within 25 yards of goal make him a rare kind of player.

My XI since the turn of the Century would look something like this:

---------Makelele----------
-----Pirlo--------Zidane-----

---Ronaldo---------Totti---
------------Messi-----------

Ronaldinho was more of a genius, but his longevity obviously doesn't compare.

Great looking selections.

Agree very much on Ronaldinho, who was fantastic but not for anywhere as near as long as the likes of Totti and Pirlo. And as good as Zidane was, anyone who regularly watched Serie A would tell you that Totti was better when they were both playing in Italy. I'm biased but Totti is a better passer than Zidane was. Zidane a better dribbler though, even in his later years.

Imagine watching those players in the same team.

Except in any game that mattered when Totti would disappear.

Which world cup?

Well done, you went and had a think and could only come up with a game he lost.

I'd deffo say he was better Zidane. What did he ever do...

2006, remember that one?

I said he was better than Zidane when they were both playing in Italy. If you watched Serie A I'm sure you would agree.

Does it matter that italy lost that game when he was awarded MOM? Plenty of other games Wireman, against the likes of Real Madrid, Barca, Chelsea, Valencia, Lyon and many more top Euro teams, not to mention against Juventus, Milan, Inter etc. But keep telling us all he never played well in big games...
