If we're not going to build our game around Sandow (and the other expensive players) then we're wasting a lot of money. He has some amazing skills, so we're better off using them.

Correct. Sandow is a waste of money.

His defence is so bad that whatever he brings in attack is negated. I realize he had plenty of mates in the terrible defence stakes this season, but he was so bad it wasn't worth it.

Get rid of him and use the money elsewhere.

I reckon Ualesi is on a second tier contract. In fact I'd put one of Avenger's houses on it.

We can still play him in firsts - just means he's cheap.

But then again Matt Ryan isn't (cheap), and he shouldn't play firsts at all... so good swap!

He's only a waste of money if we don't use him (or pay him to play elsewhere).

Also means our second tier cap is diminished early in the season, when there are top 25 equivalents available to play.

We have f**king heaps of tight forwards. There's no reason to play a bloke outside the top 25 unless there's no other merkin available.

But then again Matt Ryan isn't (cheap), and he shouldn't play firsts at all... so good swap!

As a former centre, Matt Ryan is an edge forward, and has actually had some good games in first grade. He's a decent backup, and doesn't play the same position as Ualesi.

I think with sandow's defense he needs to tackle around the legs and we just concede a quick play the ball . He seems to be more effective at 'hitting and sticking' when he goes in low. The center and edge forward need to help him by wrestling up around the ball to slow the play the ball a little knowing that sandow will be going low.

I thought that in the last couple of games he played that his defence was remarkably improved. Sandow is worth persevering with imo. Kelly will never be more than a back up half.

In relation to pou's post about Sandow being a waste of money, I'd like to say that I think he's worth persevering with under a new coach and a slightly different forward pack.

We have no choice but to perservere with Sandow. Nobody will take over his last 2 years unless we contribute a significant amount to it. Could Toby Evans push for first grade if Sandow's form does not improve?

He's very talented, but he's made of glass...

Not sure what Pou has against Sandow but I agree that we should perservere.

Our defense went worse without Sandow-Sometimes the best for of defense is attack.
When another team knows your attack is useless(with kelly) there happy to throw the ball around knowing that if turn over possesion they will be able to defend us.
When Sandow is there i think teams are a little more reserved due to Sandow's attack.(its 10x better than Kellys)

 I hear papali is nervous as well
I reckon the sandow should get one more chance. If he fails again then surely we hav grounds to tear up the contract without it effecting future salary cap

Yep that's what reckon - get him fit enough to defend somewhere in middle and tell him just tackle around the legs, then a middle forward can go and tackle the upper body. Rarely is a tackle in middle completed by one person it is normally 2-3 in each tackle. Also putting him in the middle he can't be targeted as much as on the edges / out wide.

Always thought sandow could tackle and had ok technique it is just his size that is the problem. 30 years ago sandow would have no problem as around the legs was the norm. I reckon sterlo would even have defensive issues in today's game yet he was known as a very good defensive player.

On balance I think Kelly will suit the team better in attack (assuming all are fit, if not this may change the scenario).

It almost guaranteed that Norman, Hayne and Hoppa will be in the team at full fitness and looking at them.

Norman - Good long kicking game, good running game, good passing game especially short. Questionable short kicking game, inconsistent at best and need work.

Hayne - good long kicking game, great running and passing game. needs work on his short kicking game but really should be on the end of them rather regularly providing them.

Hoppa - Good running and passing game. unknown kicking skills.

So looking at this we need somone who can provide early ball to Norman and Hayne and provide a good short kicking game and someone who can be relied on to long if required.

Now I think Norman is a better distributor of the ball, he gives good early crisp ball and generally goes the right way but he doesn't create chances because his running game is nothing special. He is not a final pass kind of player rather provides opportunity for others. On his kicking game his long kicking game is average and should not be relied on solely but he is capable of kicking long if required. His short kicking game is average and can be improved but is much better then sandows IMO.

Sandow is more of a runner, he creates chances by his running game but his passing game is actually pretty poor and he doesn't have a good long pass which can make him predictable. His long kicking game is the best Kelly and Normans but his kicking is also selfish and he will regularly go for 40/20s or chip kicks which are amazing when they come off but put you on the back foot if they go wrong.

So realistically a Sandow-Norman halves pairing would be pretty incompatible IMO and the option should be a Kelly-Norman or Kelly-Sandow pairing and I think Norman has more to offer the team then Sandow. The Other alternative is a Norman-Hayne halves pairing but Hoppa is an unknown in the kicking department and it may be to many runners between the 3 positions.
