I guess it depends on what you look for in players at what ever position in affects how you rate them. As a pure ball runner Lyon isn't even close to hodges, who I think at his best is pretty close to being as good as inglis, Renouf, gasnier, ET and tonga in the centres (when comparing the players at their zenith).

As far as being complete players though I don't think any of those guys come close to Lyon.

A lot of parra fans get their opinion of him skewed because of how things between him and the club unfolded but the guy is a freak and probably on a tier just below fittler, johns, langer and players like that.

Also agree with Magpie and the Colonel re: Renouf. Definitely one of my favourite centres of the last 20 years. I particularly like how he also developed into such a strong defensive centre as he became more experienced. A super player.

However, if I had to pick the best I have ever seen I would probably go with Big Mal. He was colossal.

When Miles and him teamed up, shit; they destroyed some teams. Although Geno moved into the backrow after a while.

I rate Renouf (the pearl) above Lyons.

I think Gasnier at his best was better than lyon. But Gasnier wasn't at his best most the time so yes overall Lyon superior.Where do people rate Hodges? I rate him the best centre ive seen. His injures slowed him down but a great career

I rate Hodges very highly. I also think that Mark Gasnier was a trifle over-rated. I rate Lyon as better than both of them. I rate Michael Cronin as the best all round centre I've ever seen.

You haven't watched a lot of rugby league have you??

As far as centres go, Fittler and Daley weren't a patch on the 'Bradman of League' Dave Brown. I remember the day he scored 5 tries and kicked 15 goals for Easts against Canterbury.

You haven't seen a lot of primary school rugby league, have you? I remember the day (A sunny Friday afternoon at Doyle Ground in April, 1966) when Robert Foster ran around the entire Rydalmere team and scored under the posts six times. There were no conversions, because none of us could kick the ball that far.

Did Robert go on to form the Go Betweens?

It is all relative. Considering I've watched a lot of football since the seventies I have seen some great centres. Comparing them between the five metre rule and the ten metre rule is a bit hard. Of who I have seen under the ten metre rule, outside of Meninga who was able to play under both rules, Fittler and Daley would still be the two best centres I have seen, under that format. The other bloke that is often forgotten amongst centres is Steve Renouf who did some amazingly freakish things on a football field.

Meninga, Miles, Cronin, Rogers, Kenny..... The list under the five metre rule is endless. It is a different style of football and difficult to compare eras. I never saw blokes like Fulton at the peak of his playing career but the bloke is an immortal.

Hodges and Lyon would be two that could sit alongside a lot of others I have seen. Gasnier however IMO was a decent player but more was made of his famous surname than his overall playing ability.

I saw Fulton play - and I think he's the best player (in any position) that I've ever seen. I think of him more as a five-eight; that is why I think that Cronin is the best centre I've ever seen.
