"The Beaver" is back for the Sea Eagles with Steve Menzies confirming he'll be playing at the Auckland Nines next weekend (Feb 15-16, 2014).
Sea Eagles legend Steve Menzies is set to strap on the famous headgear and pull on the maroon and white of Manly Warringah once again, after being named in the club’s inaugural Dick Smith NRL Auckland Nines squad.
The 40 year-old former Origin and Test star was approached by coach and good friend, Geoff Toovey, after finishing his career in France and returning to home to Australia late last year.
The veteran forward has been training with the team in secret at the Sea Eagles base in Narrabeen this week, whilst the club sort approval from the NRL for his return.

Yeah, when I first read it, I thought that they were regular first graders. On closer inspection though, that's not it either.

This whole thing has to be good for NZ RL.

The Sharks got out to six local area Christchurch Schools on Wednesday in a continuation of their community and promotional work in the Canterbury District of New Zealand.
The players were broken up into four groups in visiting the schools as they delivered the NRL’s Tackle Bullying program. The schools included St Thomas High as well as Papanui, Hornby and Aranui Schools.
Amongst those to players to take part in the school visits were Paul Gallen, Todd Carney, Sam Tagataese, Sosaia Feki, Blake Ayshford and Wade Graham, while Fa’amanu Brown was only too happy to volunteer to drop in on his former high school at Hornby.
Also keeping the Sharks occupied was a trip to an aged care facility, with Isaac De Gois, Jacob Gagan and Nathan Stapleton spending an hour mingling with some 50 hospital patients as they did their best to brighten their days.
In addition to the hospital visit, on what was another busy day the Sharks interacted with over 500 kids in total.
And in an indication of their popularity and also the appreciation shown by the Christchurch community in general, the Sharks were front and centre on the local television news bulletins and front page of the local newspaper for all the right reasons.
Tonight skipper Paul Gallen, coach Peter Sharp and a collection of Sharks NRL players will attend a Canterbury Rugby League (NZ) fundraiser at the Christchurch Casino. Proceeds will go to the local junior league, which independently of the NZ Rugby League has organized the Sharks two day visit of the Christchurch area.
The Sharks would like to thank the Lincoln University for the use of their outstanding field and gym facilities and also the Selwyn Aquatic Centre which provided access to their pools.
Next on the agenda the Sharks now move on to Auckland tomorrow to continue preparations for the upcoming Dick Smith NRL Nines event which begins Saturday.

Yeah. Didn't each club need to name at least 2 marquee players?
Nope clubs have to name one player from their top 5 paid players (marquee player) and 12 from their top 25. So in theory that's 12 first graders with 5 or 6 second tier players and/or juniors. Obviously teams like the Sharks, Knights, Broncos and Warriors have named 3 or 4 top 5 players with mostly regular first graders and a few fringe players and juniors and teams like the Raiders, Parramatta and the Roosters are sticking to the bare minimum. Don't get the concerns about injuries as a couple of trail matches that last 80 mins with tougher defense and contact would surely be more dangerous than 3-6 matches of 18 minute games, with unlimited subs and much more open space. Honestly pulled hamstrings and quad strains will probably be the most common injury in this format and I don't think an y clubs will come away with a major injury toll.

Local residents around Eden Park are worried about the '40,000+ crowds drinking all day in the hot sun and then running amok outside the ground'. An official said this scenario was 'unprecedented'.

He obviously wasn't around during the one day cricket bonanza in the early-1980s. At those games, particularly during the games against Australia (1982) and England (1983), the crowd was so big they had to let people sit on the playing area, just outside the boundary rope.

You'd never have seen so much piss sunk at a sporting fixture in your life. The old Eden Park Terrace was mayhem. However, it all worked out fine in the end.
