Mate don't think it's about the drinking culture. It's about a bunch of young guys enjoying themselves and then things turn ugly. Some can handle the drink and have a good time at the same time. Others are just being youths that think they are untouchable.

Hotel Illawarra attack: Dragons’ Craig Garvey suspended

UPDATE 6.10PM: Craig Garvey has been suspended from the Dragons. The NRL club has released the following statement:

"The St George Illawarra Dragons have this afternoon determined to stand-down Craig Garvey from all Club activities for breaching the Club’s Code of Conduct following an internal investigation in relation to an incident in Wollongong on Thursday.

"Craig informed the Club this morning of his involvement in an incident at the Hotel Illawarra.
"The incident is subject to a police investigation, no formal charges have been laid at this point in time and as such, the Club is not in a position to provide any further details.
"The NRL Integrity Unit has been informed."
Update 2.30pm: “You’re being a smart arse, I’ll knock you the f--- out” were the last words a witness heard before a flurry of punches from a man identified as St George Illawarra reserve grade player Craig Garvey left Christopher Allan bleeding on the floor of the Hotel Illawarra on Thursday.

Mr Allan and his friend James Stimson had started their night at the Illawarra Brewery, before heading to the Hotel Illawarra for a dance about 9pm.
Mr Stimson said they had been on the dance floor about half an hour when a man acting ‘‘aggressively’’ approached them.
The assailant, who Mr Allan and another eyewitness identified as Garvey, allegedly first pressed his head against Mr Allan’s before punching him multiple times in the face.

Mr Stimson said his friend had then been placed in a choke hold, and was only released when he was close to losing consciousness.
Mr Stimson said Garvey then left the scene and he was able to alert the hotel’s bouncers.
An Instagram photo allegedly taken at the Hotel Illawarra on Thursday night shows Garvey with St George Illawarra teammates Mitch Rein and Yaw Kiti Glymin.
The photo was posted on Rein’s Instagram page on Friday morning but was later taken down.

Speaking outside Wollongong Hospital on Friday, Mr Allan said he couldn’t understand why he had been singled out.
The punches had caused his left eye to close up from severe swelling, and at lunchtime Mr Allan said he was still waiting to find out if he had suffered a fracture.
‘‘I don’t put my hands on someone else for no reason and I expect the same thing from other people,’’ he said.
‘‘I was having a good night up until that point and I’ve been dealing with it ever since, not to mention the pain I’m in.
‘‘It doesn’t tickle.’’
Mr Stimson said Mr Allan had been trying to diffuse the situation before the assault.
‘‘Out of nowhere he put his head to Chris’s head a few times and then threw multiple punches,’’ Mr Stimson said.
‘‘Then he [Mr Allan] fell to the ground.
‘‘I tried to grab the guy, he got Chris and was choking him. He let go eventually because Chris nearly passed out and he just took off.
‘‘It was a coward act man, a coward act.’’
‘‘It’s just shattering, we were out trying to have a good night, having so much fun and it got cut short for some cowardly act.’’
Just before 1pm on Friday, the St George Illawarra club released a statement saying: ‘‘The St George Illawarra Dragons have been made aware of an alleged incident involving a Dragons player in Wollongong last night and the club is presently investigating the circumstances and has advised the NRL Integrity Unit accordingly’’.
The Mercury has been unable to contact Garvey directly for comment.
A police media spokeswoman said a 26-year-old man was taken to Wollongong Hospital for treatment of eye and cheek injuries.
She said the man was injured following a scuffle with another man.
While police were on scene, a separate “large” brawl occurred, leading to multiple arrests.
Wollongong police are continuing to investigate the matter.

now that garvey is going, he shouldnt be re instated if he was even found not guilty, who should we replace him with?

It is inexplicable that just 12 months ago we had an abundance of talent in the hooking position...we now find ourselves severely understrength..another example of great forward planning by the club not considering contingencies. If Rein is injured we don't have a recognised dummy half...even with rein we re severely restricted in this aspect of play...

How do you know what he thinks? What does Dugan think of himself, do you know? If Duges thinks he's 'above everybody', should we ditch him?
I don't care what he thinks of himself. If the police don't lay charges, end of. Play on. His contract status should be determined by his performances on and off the field. Not what he thinks of himself.
Grow a brain.

It pretty much depends on his previous criminal history as to the severity of the punishment (if any). If this is Garvey's first incident there is a good chance that it will be swept under the rug or he'll just receive a slap on the wrist.

One can only imagine what the press would do with the Billy Smith driving the Bus into the Water Incident.

Mate, I know this kid's uncle who is a fitness freak and personal trainer and he tells me that this kid doesn't drink alcohol and is a good kid. There is much more to this story then being reported. He will be cleared and I wouldn't be surprised if charges were brought against the other party. Let's give the kid the benefit of the doubt until he gets his chance to tell his story, I think we all will be surprised.
