not quite a star but an important figure in 70s and 80s British music and also worked with a personal favourite the Blue Oyster Cult.

Martin Birch, producer for Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and more, dies aged 71
Hard rock ‘genius’ helmed nine classic Iron Maiden albums and worked with Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac and others

Martin Birch, the producer whose bright but heavy sound was applied to classic albums by Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and more, has died aged 71. No cause of death has been announced.

Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale tweeted: “It is with a very heavy heart I’ve just had verified my very dear friend & producer Martin Birch has passed away … Martin was a huge part of my life … helping me from the first time we met through until Slide It In … My thoughts & prayers to his family, friends & fans.”

Birch was born in Woking, Surrey, in 1948, and worked first as an engineer, earning early credits on debut albums by the Faces and Wishbone Ash, plus Jeff Beck’s Beck-Ola. He also began the first of many longstanding band relationships with Fleetwood Mac, working on five albums between 1969 and 1973, and Deep Purple, working on 11 albums with them including two UK No 1s, Fireball and Machine Head.

He continued working with Wishbone Ash, engineering their prog classic Argus, and from the mid-70s established his pop-leaning hard rock aesthetic where heavy rhythm sections and intricate guitar lines – often two at a time – would be rendered in great clarity.

He worked on multiple albums with Rainbow, Blue Öyster Cult and Whitesnake, and helped Black Sabbath freshen up their heavy metal sound after Ronnie James Dio took over from Ozzy Osbourne on vocals. Birch produced their albums Heaven and Hell (1980) and Mob Rules (1981). Bassist Geezer Butler said he was “really sad” to hear of Birch’s death, while Dio’s widow Wendy said “he was a genius producer & a very dear friend of Ronnie’s. May he RIP”.

Birch’s most enduring partnership, though, came with Iron Maiden, who he started working exclusively with in the 1980s. Beginning with their second album in 1981, Killers, Birch produced a string of nine classic albums until 1992’s Fear of the Dark, three of them reaching UK No 1, including the classic The Number of the Beast. Birch described them as “my favourite band to work with … there is a great unity and nobody tries to stand out individually from the team”.

Birch retired from the music industry after Fear in the Dark, aged 42.

The death of the singer-songwriter and son of Steve Earle was confirmed Sunday night

AUG 24 2020
Justin Townes Earle, the singer-songwriter and son of Steve Earle, has died. The news was confirmed on his official Facebook page on Sunday night. He was 38.

“It is with tremendous sadness that we inform you of the passing of our son, husband, father and friend Justin,” the statement reads. “So many of you have relied on his music and lyrics over the years and we hope that his music will continue to guide you on your journeys. You will be missed dearly Justin.”

Justin Townes Earle, named after Townes Van Zandt, grew up without seeing much of his father during his childhood. “One thing that needs to be made clear is that people always say, ‘What’s it like growing up with Steve Earle,’ and I don’t f**king know,” Justin said in a 2009 interview. “You have just as good of an idea of what it's like growing up with Steve Earle as I do. I grew up with Carol-Ann Earle.”

He got his start as a working musician when he was a teenager. He played in the Nashville bands the Distributors and the Swindlers, as well as his father’s touring band, the Dukes. Steve Earle ended up firing Justin from the band, citing his son’s drug abuse. Justin Townes Earle spoke often about his history of drug abuse, saying in interviews that he’d survived five heroin overdoses by the time he was 21. He remained sober in recent years, which he discussed in multiple interviews.

He began his solo recording career with his debut EP Yuma on Bloodshot Records in 2007. He released eight albums in his lifetime, including four on Bloodshot starting with 2008’s The Good Life. His last four albums were released on Vagrant (2014’s Single Mothers and 2015’s Absent Fathers) and New West (2017’s Kids in the Street). His last album, 2019’s The Saint of Lost Causes, dealt with current social issues including the Flint water crisis and the criminal justice system in America.

In a 2019 interview surrounding his last album’s release, Justin discussed what it was like to be compared to his father. “I really do appreciate it,” he said. “There are a lot of sons and daughters out there who want nothing to do with their parents. Get over that shit. You think you’d be doing what you’re doing with no influence from your mother or father?”

Mike Noga, esteemed solo artist and former drummer for Australian rock bands The Drones and Legends Of Motorsport has died at the age of 43.

"We are absolutely devastated to inform you of the passing of our beloved brother, son, uncle and dearest friend Mike," his family posted on Facebook this afternoon.

"We know how much he and his music meant to so many of you and there's nothing we can say to make this hurt any less.

"We miss you and love you so much, Mike.

The songwriter and multi-instrumentalist was a beloved figure in the Australian music scene.

His solo career showed his skill and ambition as a songwriter, his most recent album, 2017's KING, a deep concept record loosely based on Georg Büchner's great unfinished play Woyzeck.

Those solo endeavours also offered an insight into the high regard in which he was held. KING was produced by Something For Kate's Paul Dempsey and featured actor Noah Taylor, while past efforts saw artists like Davey Lane, Pat Bourke and more help brings his rich songs to life.

Noga made his fourth solo album, Open Fire, with Low founder Alan Sparhawk late in last year. It is scheduled for release early in 2021.

We lost one of the original 67ers today. Jack Danzey has passed away. He was 5/8 to Terry Hughes back in our first ever side.

Jack started off with the Bluebags, then Balmain, before he saw the light and came to the good side.

Jack went on to become a top referee.

R.I.P Mr Danzey.

I have a story in an old autograph book involving Jack. A certain poster on this forum was also involved with that game...
RIP Jack.

I am lead to believe that Jack's passing has not been confirmed yet. I saw it on the Newtown FB Group page.

And a major edition, a rock star of British film, tv and stage Dame Diana Rigg, who has died of cancer at the age of 82. Us old codgers will remember her fondly as Mrs Peel in the 60s British spy series The Avengers, while you younger people will know her as Olenna Tyrell from Game of Thrones.

She also played James Bonds wife in the most underrated bond films of all time -OHMSS. Absolute quality
