NRL and AFL go head to head in Sydney's west on Saturday night

Didn't Roy & HG (continually) name them the "Clowns" a while back?

    The TV rights thread

Rugby League can claim 7 of the top 10 largest cities in Australia. A two state game? Well, when those 2 states equate to more than half the national population, and consider that AFL doesn't rate in those two states, it certainly supports claims that league is at least equal to the AFL.

    Visiting Schools

Back in primary we'd have Steelers in all the time, Brett Rodwell, Paul McGregor and Rod Wishart were regulars. Pretty exciting for kids to have Origin and International stars right in your school.

RL independence day arrives - NRL Independent Commission announced for November 1

People are going a bit overboard with fears of an IC running the NRL and having full controll of Rep Football & Grass roots funding. We always had that before the NRL with the ARL, didn't we??? If anything, grassroots, SOO and Tests did very well when they were run by the same people running...

Show us on TV or show us the money: Raiders

The answer to this is obvious. Just show ALL games on FTA, then all clubs benefit with FTA exposure and the obvious benefits of public exposure of the game.

    chooseday night football

I'd love to see the 1992 World Cup Final at Wembley. Crowd sounded insane at that game, we were lucky too, Renouf scored the only try of the match.

If the NRL started from Scratch Today

Exactly. If you want to see big changes, give Sydney a couple of Broncos / Syd FC / Swans equivalents - too late for that though anyway. Could have worked in the 80s at the start of expansion though, worked in Brisbane. This proposal doesn't really change the structure and size of the comp...

Sydney Cup - Games at SCG

Also a chance to trial different points systems in parallel to the real comp.

Return of game of the round at the SCG

I agree. Might be a good thing too.

Sydney Cup - Games at SCG

Great idea! Get it through to the NRL now! A comp within a comp! Great way to create more interest and sponsors, for no extra games.

    Stadium Upgrade

Yes, the Illawarra Labor MPs must be very worried. Their only hope is that they face no credible opponents (which is a fair chance).

    Stadium Upgrade

I was hoping that they'd sell off the current stadium and instead sink money into a new stadium in a much better location, particularly with Wollongong being mentioned as a potential FIFA WC city. This puts an end to that (Noreen Hay has NFI). The current site probably costs an extra 3/4...

    Worst Conditions As A Fan

I think it was the same year against the Cowboys on a Saturday night. Sitting in the southern stand, same thing... bitterly cold. The slight breeze just went straight through you, couldn't keep warm. Big wind chill factor.

Ch. 9 vs Fox - telecast of the 09 GF

I agree. Smith is a try hard. He's always focussed on saying stuff to try and get it as an audio clip on a future montage, rather than just commentating. And he's a wanker. ;-)

AFL v NRL viewing figures? huh?

Just because Victorians turn up to AFL games more than New South Welshman attend NRL games means nothing. It just highlights differences in the state's cultural makeup, geographical spread etc. In terms of being a "national" code, neither can claim one is much more dominant than the other...

New NRL commission as News Ltd plans to exit game

Whilst I hated him as PM / hate Liberals... I think he'd do well. The biggest area he could really deliver for the game would be negotiating the next TV deal.

    Parramatta Eels email

Hi all, Does anyone have an email address for Parramatta, either Paul Osborne or the leagues club? Been asked to send wishes and a photo by my boss from our school. Their website comes up blank in the contact section. Thanks in advance.

The annual finals system debate thread

YES! That's what I meant ;-) The point being, use the old ARL system but in week three, swap over so that the two winners from week one play off for the GF, and get a guaranteed second bite at the cherry. So it would have gone like this, using your numbers with this year's teams: Week...

The annual finals system debate thread

That's right. Also, in both, a team could be undefeated all year and get beaten only once (grand final qualifier) and not even make the grand final. Go to the "AFL" / old ARL system plus Warren Ryan's "extra week" suggestion. Instead of having two sudden death GF qualifiers, swap the...
