The TV rights thread part II

NZ news article - mostly explores impact of Australian court decision on NZ sports teams incl Warriors - pity it didn't do a comparison with NZ copyright law.

The new Ruck rule - The final verdict

There's nothing to challenge - we agree the idea has some merit, but it needs a lot more work/thought before being adopted. And, for once, I hope that the impact of such a rule change on the game at all levels is part of that. The 10m rule came in for the pro game, and has nearly stuffed up RL...

The new Ruck rule - The final verdict

They seemingly weren't doing that. They were giving the "zero tackle" to the next tackle, not the one in which the offence occurred i.e. "at the point of the infringement". The "six again" idea came from the proposition that penalties/punishments were too severe, and that getting rid of the...

The new Ruck rule - The final verdict

That's the big one. If you remove the theatre of the game (which comes from knowing what is going on in every aspect), you risk disconnecting why fans get into RL, especially at the ground. It also seemed (but maybe it was Ch9) that every "six again" turned into "zero tackle plus six again" -...

    USA v Japan in Honolulu

They should try to find Sol Naumu - Hawaiian in 1953 American All-Stars RL team. Get him involved for local media interest. There is a 2010 pic of Sol & wife at home in Pacific Palisades in Hawaii >>>...

    Fox obviously prefer AFL

My guess is that having a bevy of panel shows helps convince potential new subscribers that there is value in signing up. What they offer as interest for current subscribers isn't perhaps the priority. On the other hand cutting the number of panel shows to existing subscribers will do what...

    Devastated - RL1908.com

Reading the papers most of the other amateur sports leaders were saying what the RU did within their own sport was up to them, and it was of no relevance to other sports - but the Association's rules were ambiguous, intrepretations voiced & pushed by men such as E.S. Marks that put the fear of...

Spot on! Plenty are still averse to twitter & facebook, but don't realise you don't need to register (or be innoculated) to be able to see/read the posts, pics & video etc. http://www.facebook.com/rl1908link http://twitter.com/rl1908

Am definitely looking at e-books as an option asap. I would expect the club histories (updated) to be a good chance as first up. ------------------------------ Meanwhile the "tweeting from 1908" has started - can be read at this page (no registration required to see them)...

Yes, I've seen that. It doesn't seem 'alive' enough to get enthusiastic about - they don't interact with their followers - but the number of followers it has says it must be doing plenty right. There's quite a few historical characters on twitter - some are quite funny, others try to be...

Thanks mate - it might come to that. Main idea at moment is to try and see it where it leads. I'm limited in my IT knowledge, but who knows what will come of the project.

Thanks eelandia. You raised an interesting point - will RL fans wear gear related to the RL code generally, or will they only buy gear related to their club, maybe rep gear, & nothing else?

The original home ground for all clubs

The NSWRL only 3 had venues 1908-09, and any given club could've been allocated any ground - Showground, Birchgrove & Wentworth. Fair to say though Balmain had Birchgrove, Glebe had Wentworth, Souths & Easts had Showground, and everyone else had no home ground. Newcastle had 3 games in 1909...

    Devastated - RL1908.com

Two days! He sets a cracking pace! The Trove site is a great advance - would have been useful when I did the original research for 1907-1910, though they really only have the SMH up there so far that is of any real use - hopefully they will add something like The Referee sports newspaper one...
