5 reasons that RL will fail/succeed in the US

If Americans see RL as more akin to football (USA) than to rugby (RU), then maybe RL in USA shouldn't be using the word "rugby" at all, but "football".

5 reasons that RL will fail/succeed in the US

Best way to differentiate is to keep rugby in the name, but get a defining/descriptive word in front of "rugby", not behind it (as with "rugby league") - people just hear/see the "rugby" part and immediately box the game into whatever mental pigeon-hole they have for the game. Get a word in...

Experimental kicking rule to be trialled at All Stars

Not sure I like the idea of the Indigenous v NRL All Stars game having an added circus trick rule every year. As a concept this match is gaining a lot of prestige and value - I'm not convinced it needs the party theme, and it may even detract from it. I don't think this "kick for six" idea...

Explain - No Manchester Super League ?

Ironically, while Salford RL is placed into the shade by Man Utd all over the globe, Manchester United adopted the red shirt and the "red devils" tag from/after Salford. The Salford rugby club (later RL) adopted red in 1883/84 - Man Utd changed to red when they adopted the Manchester Utd FC...

    Melbourne Storm & country Victoria

Equally impressed with 10,000 at this SuperRugby trial played on a cow field: http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-union/union-news/kiwis-take-a-nobull-approach-20110129-1a8vq.html The tired old line with RL was that regional playing fields couldn't provide a playing surface of sufficient standard, and...

Foreign walkout for the ARU....implications for TGG?

Tony D'Arcy. Wallaby prop 1980-82 signed with Penrith for 1983. No first grade games.

NRL clubs being sponsored by gambling establishments

Well said. There's no doubt sports bodies need to be wary of match-fixing (and indeed the perception of it), and be seen to be acting positively and vigilantly against it, but it is not sponsorship that makes illegal acts happen or makes people overspend. In many ways the old Leagues Club...

RL independence day arrives - NRL Independent Commission announced for November 1

Sort of illustrates the point of one RL body doesn't it - RL is broken into different "forums" but what happens in one is often relevant to another. Hard not to come to the conclusion that RL structure in Aust needs a complete rebuild from scratch using/adopting 21st century processes.

    Ho Hum

Under the rules at the time, wins/draws in the play-offs continued to add points to the premiership table. (Read that twice!) Under the rules at the time, wins/draws in the play-offs continued to add points to the premiership table. Souths entered the semi-finals two points ahead of...

    6-State/Nation World Series

I think the idea has some merit, but as evidenced by comments in this thread, it would be a hard sell. You would need to be clear that this isn't an alternative form of international/Test RL, but a tournament of provincial regions with perhaps a...

    NRL split into divisions

Back in the early/mid 1990s when culling of Sydney clubs was seen as a necessary evil, I used to think an all-Sydney conference of 8 teams was the way to go - as long as it came with a Sydney 2nd division comp, with promo/relegation between the two tiers. On the positive side a prospective...

    Duncan Hall passes

RL would be a heck of a lot different if Duncan Thompson was still here exerting influence - the greatest sin any RL player could commit on a football field was to be caught with the ball in his hands & tackled. Wayne Bennett with the early 1990s Broncos was the last RL team to play with that...

NRL stars unite for flood victims - Well done Bulldogs, Eels, Panthers, Tigers

I'm not so sure El Diablo that he is having a shot at RL players. You could argue (and I think you are) that he unnecessarily revisited stereotypes about RL players, but he says they are "much maligned" and "constantly are criticised" - that's different to saying the criticisms thrown at them...
