2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

News Corp will have a tantrum. That's what bad partners do. But if they lose the rights, five years later they'll be back again as footy sells papers and subscriptions.

    2023-2028 next tv deal discussion

It's not that Paramount can't afford A-League. It's that Paramount are either getting sold off entirely or merging with Skydance. So all departments were told to reduce liabilities and boost cash positions. A-League was a liability as the subscriber base wasn't worth the outlay. It was actually...

2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

10 are in a negative cutting loop. Cut costs. Cut programming. Lose viewers. Cut costs. Cut programming. Lose viewers. The only thing that keeps people on FTA is as per the article - news, sport and reality programming. There are only 2 sports of note that can keep them afloat - one is the...

    2023-2028 next tv deal discussion

I didn't know they had announced it publicly. Got a link? This was largely pressure from Paramount, regardless of what PR spin is put on it. I heard about this coming in the pipeline a few weeks ago. I had heard 50% reduction in the rights and that the cash would shift to contra instead. That...

There's barely any post news halos. Come 7 & 7:30 they flick to streaming services.

    18th club, whose next?

You don't have to be in Townsville to support the Cowboys. There are Cowboys fans in Brisbane. They exist all over Queensland. The Cowboys have functioned on a small population for decades. The population growth that's happening outside of SEQ is only going to help them.

    2024 Crowd Watch

That's just an example, not what would have to happen every week. It doesn't even need to be 4 metros. Even 3 - Sydney, Brisbane & 1 other out Melbourne or Adelaide will result in a timeslot win on a Sunday night because the East Coast has most of the population. I was talking about the...

    18th club, whose next?

1.5million will be the population outside of South East Queensland, which obviously will have fans from other clubs but essentially the Cowboys are the only team based in that region. For what's its worth, Townsville & Cairns are both projected to be 300k cities by 2041.

    2024 Crowd Watch

Of course. Channel 10 should go for a Sunday twilight game to boost the lead in to their 7:30pm programming block. The ratings in Sydney & Brisbane alone would be higher than what they get now for the project (yuk!). At some point - 10 to 20 years - some bright spark - either at the NRL or AFL...

    18th club, whose next?

English Premier League has 20 teams averaging 38k and another 20 championship teams averaging 19k in a country of 57 million. Roughly 1 team per 1.4 million people if you ignore the lower (3rd and below) tiers. It's under 1 million if you include those lower tiers. Right now across Australia...

    18th club, whose next?

Honestly, I think half the reason people complain here is that deep down they know that most of the locations for expansion are actually going to work long term, just with varying degrees of success. They're just worried that their preferred location won't be one of the next 3 chosen. But the...

    18th club, whose next?

4 out of the top 9 crowd averages despite 3 of the teams coming in the bottom 7 on the latter. I'm not sure how anyone in their right mind can criticise them. This year Broncos are 7th and averaging close to 40k. Cowboys are 10th getting 20k+ crowds. Dolphins are also pulling in 20k+ crowds...

    18th club, whose next?

Broncos at near all-time record crowds this year. Dolphins had the 2nd highest crowds in the league last year despite finishing 13th. Cowboys last year had their 6th highest average out of 3 decades despite finishing 11th. Titans finished 8th with crowds last year (above Panthers, Eels...

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

I agree but it doesn't really change the reality. As those kids get older and more into the sport, then they'll learn more about it.

Your preferred geographic identifier for the Perth footy team

Perth Bears. Perth Jets. Perth-Glebe Dirty Reds. Perth-Western Suburbs Magpies. Whatever former Sydney team annoys Perth Red the most.

2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

That's their problem. At some point NRL may simply become a loss leader to prevent a massive subscribe churn. Or to put it another, how big will the hit to Foxtel revenues be if they lose the majority of the NRL subscriber base to another streamer?

2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

I've said it before but as other streamers improve their content packages, the appeal of Foxtel diminishes further. As the article says, they then start cutting down on content buys to reduce costs, creating a negative feedback loop. If Foxtel lose the NRL, over the longer term they'll be...

    18th club, whose next?

You know when you go to parties (I'm guessing usually uninvited) and people see you then walk the other way to avoid talking to you, it's because of miserable comments like this.

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

It happens all the time in human culture. It's a form of generational amnesia. It's not unique to the NRL.

    18th club, whose next?

Um... South Africa aren't coming back. There's 5 Australian clubs -- soon to be 4 (bye Rebels) and maybe even 3 (bye Force - again). There's 5 New Zealand clubs - now all smaller in support than the Warriors. There's Moana, pretty much a 6th New Zealand club, which if it died no one would...
