City vs Country is an annual Australian rugby league match that takes place in New South Wales between City and Country representative sides. The City side represents the Sydney metropolitan area and the Country represents the rest of New South Wales.

The concept of an annual clash between a City and Country team originally started in 1911 with a Metropolitan side taking on the Country team. The first match officially took place on June 10, 1911 with City taking the victory 29 to 8. It would take another nineteen years before an annual clash between an official City and Country side was agreed upon during the 1930 season.

Both sides were originally made up of the best players playing in the New South Wales Country Rugby League and the Sydney-based NSW RL Premiership. However, the increasing drain of players from rural areas to the NSW RL clubs led to the City side becoming increasingly dominant and the Country side uncompetitive. The 'origin rule' for player qualification being introduced in 1987 so players in NSW RL clubs originally from outside Sydney became eligible to represent Country.

The players who now represent the City and Country sides come from the National Rugby League competition in Australia. The match is played before the Rugby League State of Origin series and is often referred to as a selection trial for the New South Wales Blues team.

DRAGONS five-eighth Jamie Soward has been rushed into the Country Origin after three of the bush boys were ruled unfit today.

Soward was called into camp at Orange to cover for his St George Illawarra captain Ben Hornby who failed a medical on thigh injury suffered in the Dragons' grinding 12-11 win over the Warriors yestetday.

The call up came as Dragons centre Matt Cooper was ruled out with a hip flexor injury along with luckless Newcastle backrower Steve Simpson, who has a knee injury.

Wests Tigers backrower Chris Heighington has been called in as Simpson's replacement, while the St George Illawarra centre Beau Scott has been elevated from 18th man to fill Cooper's boots.

Country officials expect Raiders outside back Joel Monaghan - on test standby for the Dragons' Darius Boyd - to be available.

Boyd was expected to pass a fitness test on his hamstring to meet the Kiwis on Friday.

I hope Lawrence is ok. Would be great to see him playing rep football.

I usually barrack for Country (as I'm a ****reee boy - albeit Pommie Country) but I'm going to cheer for City this time as I prefer many of their players and as I think Country will win, I want to cheer the underdog.

Should be a good game.

Heighington should have been picked before Simpson in the first place.

This wont make the plebs happy

And Storm's representative contingent swelled to seven yesterday when prop Brett White was called up to play for New South Wales Country against City in Orange on Friday night.
White only returned to the Storm line-up in Round 7 after battling toe and quad problems and a long search for boots that allowed him to play pain-free.
He has made an immediate impact in his two games back.
It was enough for Country coach Laurie Daley to call on him to replace injured Newcastle front-rower Steve Simpson.
White's inclusion could also open the door for a return to State-of-Origin this year despite the Blues regular not being named in the 40-man squad.
