Hard match to really judge.

Penrith looked far more composed, which you'd expect given the Raider's reputation while playing away and with so many youngsters in the side but it wasn't THAT slick a victory.

Pritchard came up with his usual two big plays but aside from that didn't do much else.

Walshy and Kingston both looked lively, Coote looked impressive.

Lewis was also another stand out for me, he's looking very classy in that backrow.

As for the Raiders, I thought Campese's kicking game was first class through out the game - if only he could work on his ball playing he'd be awesome.

Logan was a monster and for mine was the best forward on the park.

All in all, not too much to write home about. The real test for the Raiders begins next week when they play at home on a Monday night, their favoured conditions.

Back from the game and happy with the 2 points. :D
A hell of a lot of improvement to be done, but it was OK for the first game of the year.

Bit worried about Jennings' tackle that he got put on report for. The bloke seemed to jump at the last minute while Jennings was running at him to tackle him, and he collected him low and flipped him over. Only saw it once, don't know if he will be in trouble. Any opinions guys?

Was disappointed that we let the Raiders get back into the game in the 2nd half. Got a terrible call with the Elford penalty and their heads seemed to drop. It seems to affect us a lot for some reason.
Raiders had some bad calls go against them too, though. Refs were average both ways (although we're all used to that now hey ).

I absolutely cannot believe Purtell's 2nd try wasn't given. Seriously, to me that try was the DEFINITION of benefit of the doubt... the video ref literally watched the replay over 10 times from 4 camera angles, and at every single camera angle you could see absolutely nothing to say if it was a try or no try. Nobody in the stadium seemed to know whether it was a try or not. Maybe that's just because I was watching on the big screen (not that big) and it was clearer on TV? :p I don't know.
Didn't matter one bit in the end, though, so who cares really.

Was surprised that Purtell managed to score that 95m intercept try. He's not half as slow as Raiders fans make him out to be!
Was f**king stuffed after it though.

But yeah, very happy with the win.
Also, Penrith are now (at least temporarily) on the Top of the ladder! Wooooooo!

As a side note, skeepe, you really need to think before you post. Seriously.

Well the amazing thing about that win was the fact that we barely ever sent the ball down our right side. What the fu*k is it with Matt Elliott and not using our best players? We movie Jenko to the right side of the field and so we send the ball down the left all game?

We could have run away with that game nice and early if we got Michael Jennings involved and let him and Michael Gordon carve up that right side. Instead we made things a lot harder for ourselves... not helped by a ridiculous penalty against us while we were in possession. That was a momentum changer.

Clearly held up. Braybrook needs to read the rules.

I agree.

Herbert had gone back behind the tryline before he even touched the Penrith player.
It doesn't matter if he came from an offisde position, fact is he was now back on-side.
Where did Braybrook want him to go to get onside.....once he was on the tryline he was onside and you can't be offside in your own in-goal area.....
The commentators were driving me nuts when they were talking about this while waiting for the video ref.

Herbert's kicking game was pretty good, found the corners well and got the ball to sit up. There were a few occasions when he went to first receiver and Campo clearly pushed him out of the way. He won't set the competition on fire, but hes competent and can do a job.

Glad the weather stayed away though, The Penrith fans were generally hospitable and it does seem that hardly anyone else likes Marc Herbert, let alone want him breathing....

I personally thought Canberra could sneak an upset.

Penrith though would be very worried if they didn't beat that Canberra side last night.
It was basically half of Canberra's 1st grade team, a lot of players missing for them....Penrith only had Waterhouse out.

I think the young Canberra side had a bit of stage fright in the first half....they gifted Penrith 22 points.

Simple fact is that we weren't good enough, despite whatever talent we have, the only coach that got close to getting that talent to display itself on the field was Neil Henry, regardless of it being to early in the season, I just dont think Furner has what it takes to get that talent to display itself regularly (and I know the players have a fair bit to do with this aswell)

My case in point is his trying to turn a lock into a hooker, We've got Waddell, and we've got Buttriss, who imo are both a lot better in the hooking position than tongue, use them ffs instead of doing an elliott and playing people out of position.

Just a simple intercept changes the result of the game.
Campo should have lobbed the past over the top to vidot, and scores in the corner, but thats rugby league.
I also thought campo and herbert were coming back to the right side too much, would of liked to see croker get alot more ball,as well as robinson,as he showed some pace.

Tough game as a Raiders fan, if that campese ball finds the outside of purtell we score and imo probably go on to win the match, were were all over them, they had no answer at that point

but we didnt deserve to win, we were terrible in the first half, 22 points head start is not great. Panthers looked good at times but i dont think they were a class above us, deserved winners though.

Hilarious that Purtell almost got caught after what was probably a 10-15 metre head start on Vidot (or was it Robinson?) but good on him, he got there, he's a top bloke

The Raiders come back only happened as a result of two very tough calls that went the way of the Raiders.

Elford trying to play the ball but the Raiders defender is all over him so he does what every other player does and steps a little off the mark.

Then a play the ball that could've gone either way, usually goes towards the team playing the ball but the Raiders are given the ball.

There was a clear cut knock on missed deep on the panthers line, that would have handed us 6 tackles 10 out, and i felt the there was a knock on from the first penrith try too (havent seen the replay yet so could be wrong)

point is, it was hardly one way traffic, the referee had no bearing on this result, nor the second half come back from the Raiders

Although typical for home games i felt the Panthers got some dubious home town penalties early in the game

If purtell doesnt intecept that, the Raiders are 2 points down (the way campo was kicking, probably level) and alllll the momentum. That was the game winner no doubt, but as said, we didnt deserve to win so meh

To be fair when the neutrals, commentators and fans of other sides, recognise there were decisions and calls which were unjust, such as the penalty against Elford you have to accept you were not hard done by. The Raiders were allowed back into the game on the back of some poor calls from the match officials of that there can be no doubt. No penalty against Elford and we complete our set of six with a strong kick and the Raiders would never have been allowed back in the game. Fact, whether you like it or not.

The Panthers were the better side on the night and fully deserved the the two points of that there can be no doubt.

For the record the Panthers had any number of players out who would have come into selection calculations had they been fit and available. Waterhouse, Laurie, Graham, Sammut, Blair and a couple of others who would have been considered if fit. Please don't blame injuries, they are a fact of the modern game. I repeat this better side won on the night and there can be no complaints.

Such is the nature of Rugby League really. But yeah, good sportsmanship in the same paragraph, kudos.

I believe the Raiders will be better prepared next week. Should be a good game next Monday.

The only regular first graders that Canberra were missing was Monaghan, TLL and Carney.
