No.The Eels really are between a rock and a hard place.
Do they stick with Kearney and hope that this "5 year plan" of his comes to fruition when it looks like he may not be up to the job (on face value at least). Maybe he will warm up to the job......
Yes.Or do they go down the well worn road they have treaded in the past and throw another coach out and start the whole process over again?
Fair enough. But the Board only invested in a three year contract for a rookie NRL coach. The five-year plan is Kearney's hype to try and get a contract extension regardless of performance during his three years.I personally think that they almost HAVE to stick with Kearney. The board made the call to invest in a long term plan, I guess they have to stick to it.
We've only sacked one coach early before - that was Anderson to bring in the under-performing Kearney, which certainly hasn't worked out. Brian Smith simply was not renewed at the end of his second five-year contract, and walked early (which also left behind some damage). The alternative hasn't worked out too well for them in the past........
I feel we've got no choice but to commit to NOT renewing Kearney's contract beyond his final season next year and start shopping for a decent 2014 coach... that may result in Kearney walking early, but that would be a good thing for the club. So long as we can attract an experienced coach who isn't worried about achieving some very basic KPIs in the first two years of a contract (e.g. get 8 wins in the first year, 12 wins in the second year) BEFORE any talk of contract extensions start.
