Well, 1.5 is being a little generous I guess.

Other than Manly, the best teams were all playing in the Super League comp.

1.25?

Lol ask anyone other than Superleague scum who won the 97 comp and they'll say Newcastle.

You blokes can say it doesn't count all you want but it does to us and the record books and that's all I really care about.

Where the shit did this rivalry come from? It's been going on for a few years now. So much butt hurt from both sides.

I can say as a Knights fan that Canberra are nowhere near my most hated team, is it just the fan thing? As long as I've posted here there's been a crazy amount of Newcastle hate from a couple of Raiders fans. Is that where the rivalry came from?

It's all sunshine's and friggin lollipops at the raiders too!
We only have a fullback who has signed elsewhere already, a 5/8th playing his 2nd game ever at the position in the top grade, the worlds biggest halfback, playing on a knee that could literally give way any moment now and absolutely no one of any talent or ability at hooker.

The knights are still favored by 6+ points by the bookies. So break it down any way you like, this is very winnable for both sides. Neither are in a great place right now. You dont get to have a mortgage on the "call a spade a spade and acknowledge when you're up shit creek without a paddle in sight." label.

The only positive for the Raiders is that the poison dwarf hasn't been there long enough to completely f**k up the joint

The Knights are a shambles, but I'm not confident the Raiders can get the win. I'm going to tip them purely because they're slight outsiders and I get more points if they win

I think you can add Newcastle, Roosters, Parramatta and St George to that list - they all had good rosters and success in the era immediately after the leagues merged in 1998.

I agree there were some shite teams like Balmain, Wests and Souths but SL had some that were almost as bad such as the Adelaide Rams and the Perth Reds

How cute, Knoughts fans pretending that 1997 actually means something.

As someone who started watching Rugby League in 1997 and was pretty much neutral and watching BOTH competitions with great interest, I'd say the ARL comp was the one that meant more.

I have long supported the benefits that SL gave us - better professionalism, video referees, zero tackle count etc but don't try and re-write history completely by lying outright.

Had the Raiders walked out of the Super League with the premiership, this conversation would be very different and that's all I'm going to say on the matter.

And yet the record books and the fact that the 1997 ARL GF is shown on more highlight reels than any other game suggests that a hell of a lot of people think that one of them meant a lot.
Where'd you pull this bullshit from?

Balmain vs Canberra in '89 is widely regarded as the best grand final of all time.

Widely regarded lol?

That's besides the point anyway. I couldn't give a shit what the best GF of all time is. That's subjective. Bottom line is though: the 97 ARL GF is considered as one of the most memorable games in the game's history. It's footage is sprawled through highlight after highlight and to this day it's still mentioned regularly by those in the media, etc. That wouldn't be the case if it was widely considered that game and that comp "meant nothing".

Winning a premiership against half of the top level teams isn't comparable to winning a premiership against all of them, hence why the Knoughts *and* Broncos 1997 trophies are both regarded as irrelevant.

Don't pretend you don't know it's true :)

I think you meant "half comp".

You blokes can try and tell yourselves that all you want. Doesn't make it true though.
I don't need to tell it to myself buddy. Look it up :)

Anyway, there's no doubt that it was an exciting finish. It's just a shame the game was split into two comps otherwise the Knoughts may have had the opportunity to win a premiership you wouldn't have to pretend is real.

Mate, it's considered a real premiership to everyone that matters as well as the record books.

The only people that ever try to argue it are a couple of butthurt supporters of Superleague clubs and that says it all really.

Why would Super League have anything to do with it?

The Broncos 1997 trophy is just as irrelevant as yours.

I've got to side with Canberra on this one. Sorry, Newcastle. Ever since Johns packed it up, you guys have been fat whales floundering in shallow waters with the likes of Gidley being the top dogs. I called it very early on that the squad would fail Bennett and so far, it categorically has.

Say what you want about Canberra, their club is a trainwreck at the moment too but they know how to spot a good junior.....And then they know how to lose them as quickly as they found them.

Why would Super League have anything to do with it?

The Broncos 1997 trophy is just as irrelevant as yours.

NRL Stats recognizes Super League Bile, so like it or not, there are two Premiership sides in 1997. One just happens to be the far superior footy team.
