I've heard that they are thinking of naming a dual-coaching team -my pick is James Leulauai and Gary Kemble. Good mix of personalities and good experience.

The media in regards to NZ league are so geniused, re: rattue in herald among other things NRL rookie "Perenara" what a nuffie

Also they're adopting a QLD approach and will include some kiwi greats in each camp before tours and games. Which is a great idea - teach some of those kids especially aussie raised about the history of the jersey.

Also dont think some of the new people are happy with the inclusion of aussies etc - they going to be more hardline.

No more brent webbs or nathan fiens. In fact I wouldnt be suprised if they both were never to play for the kiwis again.

Yeah, what's up with that? That's a bit like someone from Ngati Toa who is living in the South Island for three years wanting to play for Ngai Tahu.

Oh, and encouraging his new team mates to do Ka mate before the kick off.

Heard on Primetime that Prescott had the nod!
I don't know much about him. How do you think he will go?

AdvertisementThe New Zealand Rugby League board will this week rubber-stamp the surprise choice of Gary Kemble as the next Kiwis coach, the Sunday Star-Times can reveal.

Kemble, who helped prepare head coach Frank Endacott's 2000 world cup side, is expect to be named the 27th coach of the national side on Friday.

A successful real estate agent in South Auckland, Kemble has coached only one season in the past four years, taking the Counties Manukau Jets to the Bartercard Cup playoffs last season. But he has extensive international experience with the Junior Kiwis, NZ residents and NZ XIII through the late 1990s.

In 2001-02, he was an assistant coach at the Warriors and was involved with the team that reached the 2002 NRL grand final.

He emerged as a strong recommendation from the national selection panel, made up of former national coaches Endacott, Howie Tamati and Graham Lowe after a four-man short list were interviewed.

The other three candidates were James Leuluai, Phil Prescott and Paul Bergman. Leuluai and Prescott will this week be offered assistant coach roles with the Kiwis. Bergman could be invited to assist All Golds coach Wayne Bennett for the centennial match against the Northern Union in October as part of his development at senior international level.

Leuluai was assistant coach to Daniel Anderson from 2003-05 and, after stepping aside to allow Brian "Bluey" McClennan to be coach two years ago, has again missed out.

The NZRL board is expected to confirm the appointments when they meet early this week.

There's a feeling Kemble deserved his chance some years ago and his recent lack of time in prominent coaching positions has not been held against him.

Kemble is considered to be technically well qualified and had a strong background in the earlier part of this decade, working alongside Anderson at the Warriors during their run to the 2002 finals and overseeing the Kiwis pre-world cup campaign in 2000 with Graeme Norton when Endacott was still at Wigan. He also guided a Warriors team to the 1997 NRL reserves final. Kemble was an unsuccessful applicant when McClennan got the job in 2005.

I think it all depends which paper you read. I do think it would be ironic if the Crayfish
got the gig since he was shafted out of the NZRL in the first place.

I'd be happy with him or Prescott.

I like that combo, be good to see Prescott in particular get international groundings as the assistant coach, and of course Bergman with the All Golds next to uncle Wayne...

Former Kiwis fullback Gary Kemble will be confirmed as the new national coach today, sparking fury in Wellington's league community.

Kemble will meet with the New Zealand Rugby League to discuss terms before an official announcement is made tomorrow.

Shortlisted candidates, New Zealand A coach Phil Prescott and James Leuluai, are expected to be offered assistant positions.

Wellington Orcas coach Paul Bergman, who was also interviewed for the job, was philosophical yesterday, but The Dominion Post understands the Bartercard Cup side's chairman, Noel Kerrisk, has resigned from his Orcas post in disgust at the decision.

NZRL chairman Andrew Chalmers would not confirm the appointment. He said last month the new coach must be "fully involved in the domestic high performance coaching and development structures".

Neither Kemble, Prescott or Leuluai are currently coaching, and Orcas chairman Kerrisk is believed to be furious Bergman was overlooked.

Kemble said he received a phone call from the NZRL yesterday but was hesitant to discuss details.

"I haven't signed anything ... all I've heard is they want to see me (today). I haven't even talked about anything. I would say that they'll be talking to me about contractual things."

Kemble said it would be an honour and a privilege to coach the Kiwis.

"I'm really pleased. Representing your country is always good, and if I have got the job it's great."

He will put his real estate business commitments on the backburner to focus on the Kiwis job.

Kemble, whose most recent coaching experience is leading the Counties Manukau Jetz to the Bartercard Cup playoffs last year, has extensive international experience with the Junior Kiwis, NZ Residents and NZ XIII sides during the 1990s.

He was an assistant coach at the Warriors in 2001-02 and was involved with the team that reached the 2002 NRL grand final.

Kemble admitted he had begun mulling over strategies for the October test match against Australia at Westpac Stadium, which is followed by a three-test tour of England.

"It's not going to be a rush job because everything's in place now.

"I think the first thing for whoever takes the team is getting in touch with the players to make sure that they're all onside."

Bergman said he hoped to be invited to assist Australian super coach Wayne Bennett for the All Golds' centennial match against the Northern Union in October.

Former Canterbury Bulls coach Prescott said he had yet to hear from the NZRL regarding an assistant position.

Former Kiwis captain Ruben Wiki, now retired from international league, said both Kemble and Prescott were up to international coaching standards. "They're good coaches in their own right, so whoever gets the job will no doubt do a good job for the Kiwis."

A total of 15 applications were received for the job of succeeding Leeds-bound Brian McClennan.

Kerrisk should've got the sack anyway. Who would retain a coach for a Bartercard team that has failed to deliver on all his self assured promises over the past few years. Bergman can talk up a good game, but certainly lacks in the coaching department. I'll give him credit for his work with his development programmes, but when you resort to asking other coaches how his team can beat theirs??????

Bergman has absolutely zip credibility among the coaching fraternity.

His success rate is so low that I'm surprised he was even considered.

If you look at the "habits" of the players he has coached, it really tells a story.

Are you suggesting he gets his players from a convent?

If he had, he may have had a higher success rate - at least they would have
been disciplined
