Please i hate the whole 1st gear bs. Souths played well, very well.

Souths played well enough to beat Brisbane but were far from impressive. Plenty of dropped ball from Souths. Brisbane had the better completion rate.

Round 1, 2014: In none of the eight games did a team destined to finish in the Bottom 8 beat a team who ultimately finished in the Top 8. Five of the eventual Top 8 won in the first round, and the other three lost to one of those five teams.

Got a sample size a bit bigger than 1?

Corey Parker is severely restricted under Bennett. One of the best offloaders in the game being played at hooker? Surely that was a one off. Play a real utility there if you insist on giving McCullough a breather.

Souths crushed the Broncos with one hand in conditions that favoured the Broncos. That was a demolition job. The score flattered the Broncos in the end.

Souths weren't at their best but still impressive for a round 1 effort. Back to the drawing board for the Broncos. A few non performers, I saw Thaiday, Blair and Gavet in particular. Thaiday submitted too easily and to Keary of all players who is a good defender but Thaiday should still have him covered.

any realist Broncos fan didn't expect to win this game, we have too many things to overcome (new coach, combinations, new signings), Souffs on the otherhand whilst it may be the first game of the season have their combinations set in stone (the forward pack may have changed but the spine of the team hasn't)

good win for them though, I don't think that game should be used as the yardstick when measuring up how we will go this season

but after reading a few comments, looks like we're locked in for the spoon

that is of course until the other 14 teams play

Bennett wants Brisbane to become as good as Souths in a couple of years time.

Wayne you have no chance.

A very solid win by Souths but still lots of room for improvement.

A tough one coming up next against Roosters.

Milford imo is not ready to play five eighth.

I'm not taking a slight on the Broncos here but genuinely curious. Does the Broncos roster fit the mould for Bennett football? It's a good attacking roster but we all know Bennett likes to play the percentages. It worked at St George with a roster that suited that style. It didn't work at Newcastle and I feel like it would be a mistake to try the same thing at Brisbane.

If I were a Broncos fan I'd be wanting to see Parker offloading to Milford whenever he can. Fit the game to the players strengths. Two offloads for the team in the entire game seems flawed to me when you have the best offloader in the game in your side (Parker had 0 offloads).

Broncs fans, am I reading too much into Round 1?

it will take time, we didn't get a repeat set all night, that is Ben Hunt's biggest weakness right now.. we have all seen his vision and running game but without doubt he needs to develop a kicking game especially a grubber kick to get repeat sets for the team

I think we have the roster that can play Bennett's style of disciplined low risk football but that for me relies heavily on the development of our halves, we scored alot of our tries last year off the back of 1 player's brilliance, I don't think we will see that so much this year

also, I have to giggle at the Canberra fans laying the boot in to Milford simply because he's not wearing their jumper anymore, this is the guy that single handedly won you games last year (not many, but with that roster I can't blame the guy), it's reminiscent of when Sandow joined Parra and Bunniesman was in every Parramatta match thread death riding the poor guy

Really?

That's a big jump from 27k from last year. Last year was a shocker for crowd numbers in round 1. This game at Suncorp will see that round 1 starts with a game that will draw more of a crowd that will be 15-20k bigger than the same game last year and bigger crowd wise than a lot of the round 1 games from last year combined.

Sydney has had it's chance on this front, now let QLD'ers show you how to open a season.

Let me guess, multiple papers reported that the crowd would be 15-20k more?
Gospel.

If this game was in England they would be asking for Thiaday to be sent.

I think successful Bennett teams have adapted to him rather than the other way around.

Souths made the bozos look like schoolboys.

The conditions suited the QLDers.....Souths are a much bigger side, the Bonzos had everything to play for, plus an enormous home ground advantage, the return of Bennett, Parker's 300th game, no Sam Burgess or Teo.....blah blah blah, etc. etc.

Flogged. Embarrassing really.

Souths will win the comp at least 3 of the next 5 years. Maguire owns Bennett. And every other coach.

Lots of work for Brisbane to do. Souths did enough to beat them but were far from great.

Milford needs to be fullback while Boyd is injured or at least piss Kahu off give Eden a go can't be much worse

Piss off Reed and Maranta

Bring in Vidot

Blair is not a prop and Gavet needs a lot of work. So much not to like about Brisbane

Very happy with the win but the true test will come next week against the Roosters.

Like I said in my previous post the Broncos obviously had a lot going against them in terms of combinations, new players and new coach so it doesn't surprise me they lost but the scoreline sure was interesting.

Souths weren't their best but they sure did play some good footy at times, just gotta watch out for the dropped ball, way too many times we lost the ball on the first or second tackle. Lucky for us the Broncos were just as bad and gave away a lot more penalties. Fix our ball handling and we're in for another big year. I think the boys know just how much it means to go back to back and won't slack off in the slightest this year.

As for Souths. I can see that Grevsmuhl starting at some point. And good to see Stewart fit and healthy

why do you refer to your own team as if you're just a neutral on-looker?

it's a well known fact you support Souffs, do you speak about your own club like that so that when they do fail you can always use the old "I am not a fan" line?

3 out of the next 5 is a dream, I don't know the contract situation but I know your fullback will be demanding all sorts of money next time around and you can fully expect him to use all the tricks to soak every dime out of whatever club or code he goes to and let's not beat around the bush on that, Greg Inglis is a huge reason as to why Souffs are a force. Then you've got all these promising outside backs, you can't keep them all and over a 5 year period it's almost too much of an expectation to think you can win 3 out of the next 5 "at least".

To put this game in context in 2006 the Cowboys towelled up the Broncos in Rd 1 to the tune of 30 odd points.

Everyone said the Broncos were going to miss the eight and the Cowboys were contenders.

Broncos go onto win the the Grand Final, and we finish nowhere.
