WAYNE Bennett was glad his
Broncos lined up against the
Rabbitohs on Thursday night.
Not that he enjoyed the 36-6 drubbing South Sydney handed his side at Suncorp Stadium.
But the hard lessons learned on the night were a reality check for where the
Broncos are with their football right now, and how much they have to improve to be a premiership contender.
?In a cynical way, I am pleased we did play them tonight,? Bennett said.
way, I am pleased we did play them tonight,? Bennett said.
?At least we know how far we have got to go.
?We didn?t get an easy game and all of a sudden get a false sense of security and confidence.
?We?ve just got to get a lot of unforced errors out of our game. Until we do that we won?t match it with them.?
The ruthless and relentless
Rabbitohs reminded Bennett and his assistant Kevin Walters of another stellar side of the 1990s.
?Kevin Walters said after the game, ?That was the
Broncos 20 years ago.?
?We?ve just swapped our jerseys?,? Bennett quipped.
?So we all know how it works here.
?We?ve got to get back to making it work.
?That is the journey we are all on.
?South Sydney were extremely good, and there were lots of lessons for us in that.
?We need to realise what good teams do, compared to the teams that aren?t so good.?
Bennett has explained the controversial comment he made last year about Souths being ?predictable? as in reality a complement.
What he was saying was that they are predictably excellent in the way they execute their plans, in contrast to Brisbane.
?We are predictable at being unpredictable?it drives a coach insane,? Bennett said.
Bennett said his team tried hard, but failed to execute at the level required.
?It is just doing the little things right,? Bennett said.
?The game is too clinical today to make the mistakes that we make and think we can compete with the top teams.
?At half-time they had 20 sets and we?d had 13, and we paid the price for that in the second half.
?You can?t have the best team in the competition seven sets ahead at half-time because of penalties and repeat sets they weren?t giving away.?
