Are 17-18 yr olds straight out of PNG gunna be ready to play even Qcup ?

Ideally you would think they enter a team in the Mal Meninga Cup and the other QLD Cup lower grades - although that seems to be only Brisbane teams so maybe not possible

As for the answer, That depends on the kids

Tigers had a winger on the weekend who played Harold Matthews last year.

Casey McLean who is centre at Panthers again was Harold Matthews player last year.

Warriors had an 18 year old on the bench.

So there are 18 year olds in the top grade, So it is possible for them to play the grade under. So for these new areas the sooner they start developing the better

Seems to me we need to have a proper reserve grade then make NSW and Qlnd cup U21's comps with 4 overage players allowed per team.

U16's
U19's
U21's
reserve grade
first grade

QRL won't let it happen. PNG are copying a model that works so it will interesting how it goes missing a few steps

I get it there are a few 18 yr old kids playing first grade …these are kids coached in Australia all their lives…not PNG

Issue is with Perth and png entering the nrl a year apart is they are going to be fighting over linited nrl players

png has the advantage of lesser travels times on average and also no tax on salaries

ideally the two clubs entries would be more staggered than being one year apart

PNG gunna have 20 of their 30 squad locals from Day 1

This is true but @mikail-eagle has posted some stuff from on the ground in PNG about 6 new development officers. Each for the regions - which hasn't been done before.

Mid last year the bid team came to Penrith and did a tour and are copying the Panthers model which is proven success.

Andrew Hill the CEO was at the Dogs
Joe Grima has coached lower grades over here and London Broncos - Running the development program

So while none of that guarantees success, I'd still have them bottom 4 for the 1st 5 years they are

It is positive steps and the best that can be done given the circumstances. Any expansion outside of NSW/QLD is going to have development and player number concerns.

So let me get this right - the hunters Queensland cup team isn't a pathway because it doesn't lead to an NRL team and so the players aren't at that level.

Yet when the team comes in those same players will be at NRL level. Ok then.

Sort of.

Part time players aren't as good as full time. That is the same with any team.

There's a reason they're part time: because they aren't good enough.

If the hunters players are good enough theyd be picked up by existing NRL clubs and be fulltime.

I know you troll but you can't seriously think every QLD Cup and NSW Cup player is part time because they aren't good enough

You are in the Perth stand alone camp on here. Where do you think those players will come from?

there has been only a handful of PNG born and raised who have played in the NRL…

whilst we all hope after the injection of a couple of hundred million from the taxpayer this will change … it’s not going to change overnight …

it’s not just a numbers game ..although that helps ….its giving the best kids exposure to elite sports science and coaching…and playing the best level of competition you can whilst they are developing… that won’t happen in PNG for 7-8 years best case scenario

Yes and the process has started, hopefully WA and NZ 2 start their process very soon.

So what is the alternative?
we don't expand to these areas because it is too hard?

A draft isn't coming in.
Non NRL clubs don't have the finances to have full time players on their books.

NZ South Island and WA aren't exactly flush with NRL ready players either.
