A 3rd team in SE Qld would certainly be the "quick win" out of all the options , but gees.. it's a soft choice right now.

I'd love to see each wave of expansion have an element of "let's go to AFL-land" to balance out consolidation of our heartland.

So this wave we have Dolphins, then (hopefully) Perth.
Next wave (teams 19-20) we have one of Brisbane3 or NZ2, with Adelaide being the other team that comes in.
itd be so rugba league though. Lets over saturate a city whilst leaving others totally unserved. This is the way.

State government investment in a permanent team is much more reliable than an off hand comment about funding from a federal government for a regional team fifo to a 3rd world nation in response to ever evolving geopolitical drama

Actual investment in png and solidifying pathways into existing NRL clubs would be much more beneficial for everyone involved right now - with a goal to build to that port moresby will one day have a permanent team

A Cairns based team would bring in 30 odd squad members to a racially based team that anyone half decent would be poached instantly anyway

A very well funded high performance centre with scholarships and pathways set up to every NRL club could bring in many more, and also improve the livelihoods of all these aspiring players 10 fold
WA Govt arent funding a team. They dont need to, we can generate enough revenue ourselves. What hopefully they are funding is infrastructure to grow RL in WA.

But but but AFL might take over Brisbane!!

What a f-ing joke
1. That's not going to happen no matter how many clubs either code has

2. Who cares what the others codes are doing, focus on growing OUR game

3. Have some bloody faith in our games ability to a) not need a heavy club saturation in a city to maintain relevance and b) appeal to people in new markets - because it is by far the best sporting product in this country and sure as shit can

So your setting up a club to fail just so that other clubs can poach from them??

Why not just set up a pathways program DIRECTLY into EVERY nrl club
Won't fail, the top end always leave to go elsewhere eventually, you make it sound like the whole 17 are leaving for the other 17 clubs, mr worsecase scenario over here... i dont think anyone swoops in to poach a new team squad until a few seasons in anyways, and if they are a premiership threat... look at the panthers, getting picked off every year, but still producing replacements..

Depends on a lot of things between here and them ever setting foot on an NRL field but that is certainly the image they seem to be pushing. If they had a play at Taumalolo or Yeo as their marquee signing who do you think they would go for?

Also a FIFO side won’t be attracting many Australian or NZ players anyway but that’s another matter.
Out of 30 players at least ten won’t be from the pacific islands or png

but if they produce enough quality players that their rosters ends up like that so be it

loads of current nrl clubs have problems attracting players anyway

If they were concerned about AFL they should have admitted the Firehawks! This idea that we need three clubs in a city of less than 3 million people is ludicrous, but so RL.

I'm only responding to what you said
If if that's not the case then it isn't providing that many new players to the NRL

What in your views is the point of this club and what are its benefits to the NRL

I bet they're falling over themselves to have a new team playing in PNG and numerous islands, that'll boost subscriptions and advertising in Australia lol
And yet here we are

Monday night football featuring the pacific cyclones

Not if was paid in advance, possibly 10 year cycles
Big if
Its more likely that if this is even something the gov is serious about (and that's another big if, since when do we believe off hand comment from politicians) that it would be a yearly funding, the government budgets yearly, its an easier sell for small payments over multiple years
