I understand the desire to see "Australia first". When it comes to rugby league I see it more as "rugby league first". Brribane and PNG are rugby league heartlands. NZ is a not far away from being a rugby league heartland. Adelaide and Perth are fumbleball wastelands. There's still a lot of hatred for rugby league in Adelaide and Perth.

The arguments for Perth don't make sense. We've got blowbards on here saying it is needed to increase the value of the broadcast rights and club sponsorship deals. I don't see how a team in Perth can do either of those things.

1. All of its matches will be broadcast into Perth on 9Gem.
2. It'll be lucky to get 4-6 FTA games each year.
3. Any game broadcast on a Thursday or Friday will be up against the 6pm news and AwFuL.

A Perth-based team will be lucky to get 15k FTA viewers in Perth on a Thursday or Friday night. On A Sunday arvo it'll be broadcast on FTA at 2pm. Not a great timeslot for viewers. There's a reason Ch9 broadcast into Brisbane and Sydney at 4pm Sun arvo and not 2pm.

It's laughable that people on here think broadcasters and advertisers will pay through the roof for such neglible gains in viewership In Perth. There will be a loss of viiewers n Brisbane for Perth vs Sydney games. Ditto in Sydney for Perth vs Brisbane. Expect the soapdodger, butthurtski and Maxipad to argue all of this is irrelevant because of Kayo.
It’s our duty as custodians of rugby league to grow the game internationally

its not like super league will be helping)

PNG is definitely going ahead!
The Albanese government didn't follow through on promised tax cuts for struggling middle income families, instead that money is going to a Rugby league team in PNG! As families are struggling with the cost of living the government has decided on Rugby league in PNG instead.

With some families deciding on heating or food- thankfully they no longer worry about Rugby league in PNG.
Nimirata randhawa would be proud of this kind of facetious argument

Well if they get in without our govt money and it's based totally in PNG then it will be thoroughly deserved.

I have to see the funding before I am 100% behind it, I like it in theory but I don't see how it gets up.

I am anything that potentially grows the foot print of the game...International helps domestic but if this Fiji Flegg team goes well.

PNG pathways it helps the International game also, So is 2 fold.

Too many people on here forget how small we are

If it's fully funded by png then 100%. Otherwise it's just a fake club like GWS

So? Toowoomba has produced 42 rugby league players. Should they get a team?

Producing players is important, but ability to support a team is more important.

His list of WA players is wrong anyway.

There’s also Royce Hunt, Jackson Topine, Waqa Bake, Josh Rogers, Ruben and Kennedy Cherrington, Adam Quinlan, Destiny Brill. Then you have Daniel Holdsworth, Bronx and Bryson Goodwin who played juniors in WA as well.

New Zealand 2 and 3 grows the game at the international level.

Perth provides nothing for the international game. The things people cite as positives about Perth aren't compelling. 4.1k players in a state of 2.8m is pitiful, yet the soapdodger reckons it is a slam dunk victory for the Perth bid. 8k FTA viewers and 5k PTV viewers offer no value. The soapdodger tries to get around this by saying the GF and Origin gets 100k on the main channel. FTA want the 18th team to provide strong ratings during the regular season. A Perth team won't provide much value for regular season games.

There's no guarantee Perth can support an NRL team. We're yet to see the business case. The only businessman who has publicly advocated for a team is Peter Cumins.

A Perth-based team won't generate much revenue from game day at PRS. No pokies.

It's not like Brisbane and Sydney where the Lions, Swans and other AwFuL games aren't competing with the 6pm news on a Thursday and Friday night. A Perth team will be up against AwFuL and 6pm news.

If you're going to b pedantic, the Goodwin brothers are from NSW. They moved to Perth when his brother played for the Reds.

Shane Wright grew up in rural Queensland.

They still played 7 seasons of junior grades in WA, Kalyn ponga also born in WA, Kevin Proctor lived in WA for 3 years when he was a kid.
Then going back a few years there was Darren Waters at the Raiders, Jarrod Millar who also played for the Reds.
Just imagine what they could produce if they had a team.

Yeah, those pro Rugby league PNG protests holding up traffic have forced the governments hand. Lose too many votes now if they pulled out..and Albo always delivers on everything he says..
Redirecting tax cuts away from people earning 185k plus pa towards those hit by the cost of living crisis
