Yeah I can't see tv agreeing to a 19 round comp. With less games, it will also be harder to get funding for stadiums.

Counting the split Round for Vegas the regular season goes for 28 weeks. That is the issue more so then the actual weeks played

Starting in the 1st weekend of March is too early. If they can start that 2 weeks later, Move Origin to even a Monday night then that helps.

It would be good if they started the season a bit later. The weather is too hot in March. April is a better time to start the season.

If they do start in March then they should have two split rounds over four weeks so all games can be played at night.

only real clubs that were useless were Hunter mariners and Adelaide rams
Now if the Mariners had only listen to me and moved to the Central Coast, rather than morphing my idea into a soccer club, things could have been different

And if we keep heading down the expansion path potentially to 24 teams, we will have to bring Chubby Checker back

How do you explain Super League drawing larger attendances than ARL in 97?
Simple Super League war

Players were not committed, it was dog eat dog

Only clubs that were exempt from the shitfight were drawing crowds

You cant be engaged when everyone is death riding your club and rugby league in a heartland city.

Casual fans had switched off

Talk was never about next weeks game

Has there ever been so many words written without saying anything? Talk about politician spiel: we might do this, or we might do that, we haven’t decided anything.“

ideally 19 games against each team plus Magic weekend.
3 stand alone rep/origin weekends. 23 week season. Have an nrl nines weekend pre season.
then oct/nov dedicated to proper international comps.

Yes, at least they are open to it, broadcasters won't pay the same for it tho... the product needs to remain, if they are worried about only 34 marquees having back up, just set it aside as a stand alone week, they did a Sunday night to shorten the origin period, to 5 weeks instead of 6, do that again for the 2nd one but do it on a Saturday so people can enjoy it properly, sunday is dumb, then keep 1 and 3 as the normal Wednesdays, then tell the clubs they arent allowed to back up period under the RPA rules.
I'm for conferences, that works for rounds and local derbies, like the paper stated, there's room for a few extra blockbuster games per year as home and away for most teams, integrity of the draw is bullshit anyway coz, the salary cap and origin period affect certain teams anyway

Saturday night would deliver the worst possible ratings for Origin.

Because he knows he can't do anything without clubs getting on board.

If Clubs are losing 3 home games that is a huge slab of money that is without the TV having their say about less derbies and so on

Yeah there are tweeks they can do in the season that don't involve less derbies etc

Are you trolling or do you not know anything about history?

The reason the NSWRL became the national competition was because of gaming machine revenue. NSW was the only jurisdiction in the country that allowed licenced venues to generate revenue from gaming machines between the late 1950s and 1991. Queensland and Victoria didn't legalise gaming machines until 1991. Tasmania, ACT and Northern Territory followed suit in the late 90s.

Most of the Sydney clubs rely heavily on gaming machine revenue to survive in 2024. Some Sydney clubs struggle to generate $10m from football operations, but are able to reel in $50m from punters playing the pokies. Compare that to the Broncos who generate almost $50m from football operations and reel in $10-15m from gaming. Cowboys generate about $24m from football operations and about $15-18m from gaming.

Easts Tigers and Redcliffe Dolphins have probably worked themselves into a stronger position than every Sydney club since they gained access to pokies 30 years ago. It's proof that there wasn't anything special about the NSWRL and its clubs that allowed them to become the nucleus of the "national" competition. They just had the fortune of having access to gaming machine revenue for 30 years while the BRL clubs didn't.
Am I able to like this post 10 times? Absolutely spot on

Article suggests they want a stand alone origin period which stops rep stars backing up
Yep 23 week NRL (19 rounds plus four rivalry games as article suggests)

4 weeks of finals

3 weeks of rep footy mid year (Origins and Internationals)

4 weeks of internationals locked in as part of the calendar every year (as mentioned in the article)

34 weeks of content and over 250 games a year for broadcasters, plus NRLW. More than enough content for a healthy TV deal increase

Point three demonstrates just how paranoid the floggers are about any threat. Even more reason to bang a team in Perth

Going by all the recent noise you would have to surmise that it’s Perth #18 and PNG #19 .
