I think mate one thing NZ2 has going for it that the Aussie teams don't is a potential increase in Sky NZ money.

All expansion teams (including any potential NZ team) will help the NRL get an Aussie TV deal boost because of the extra content. But it's only NZ2 alongaide the Warriors that will drive an increase from NZTV.

A factor that the NRL will no doubt be keenly aware of and may offset any 'licence fee' discrepancy between The Jets and NZ2, if indeed there is any discrepancy at all.

Careful there - the NZ TV market doesn't have the same degree of competition that Australia does - there's no pay TV competitor for Sky, and free to air just won't have the cash.

There's word that TVNZ may be looking at a Pay TV service of their own, but honestly good luck to them taking on the might of Sky when Spark Sport have tried before & failed.

Given that Sky is likely to be in a monopoly situation for the next TV rights negotiation - they really have the upper hand, don't they?

Yes absolutely, there won't be a bidding war for the rights, but you'd imagine that a doubling of the NZ content including a derby match has got to be worth something extra. Point taken though, the value won't double

two teams should be 40 to 50 million

plus it’s free content for foxsports in Australia so even more valuable

nrl tv ratings were on par with super rugby and that’s with one nz nrl team and awful time slots for many nrl games in nz

we can easily become the dominant football code on tv in Australia fairly soon

As it stands, Sky are in a kinda take it or leave it position with the Warriors but the introduction of a brand new team and the hype surrounding them..
That will drive new subscribers through the roof! It's must have content!
All Peter will be doing is say, look, we can afford easily to run it on fta and let the entire country get on board as an investment into the growth of the game or what are you willing to pay?
In all honesty, it could be more than double what they pay now.
Since the last deal ,the NRL has exploded in popularity in NZ , it probably worth double in it's current form.

Without Spark we are back to a NZ monopoly. Vlandys wont turn down $30mill and its hard to see why Sky would pay more when there is no threat to them losing the rights. Contra went up $10mill a year in this tv deal cycle. We know $5mill was from Ch9. The other $5mill was split between SkyNZ and Fox, split unknown so we dont know how much extra cash the Skynz deal was actually worth.
Every $1million increase they offer requires them to get 1,225 new subscribers to break even.

Im sure Sky want to pay as little as possible whilst retaining exclusive rights … I guess it’s up to the NRL to do everything they can to break the “monopoly “ you speak of …one of which is FTA … they are certainly going to the market when the game has never been more popular there…
