If you were starting from scratch you'd have
6 Sydney clubs
3 Brisbane clubs
2 Melbourne clubs
2 Perth clubs
1 Adelaide club

in terms of metro split. Thats a strong 14 club city comp then you can add in the larger regional cities/NZ on top of that. What weve got is just a historic hangover of evolving a local comp.

Not if it is a rugby league competition. Merging Sydney & Brisbane comps together would result in strongest representation in the strongest league markets. Throw in Melbourne for grand final audience & Auckland for sky deal & that's most lucrative scenario.

Clearly not, AFL 18 Australian clubs, 16 spread across all metro regions = $2.5bilion revenue difference.

I don't think this is as far fetched as it seems. I support WA's inclusion in the game too. Just some thoughts....

- PVL is very profit focused, whether this is the best strategy is up for debate. However a SW Brisbane team would be more profitable and less expensive for the NRL than a WA team.
- NRL's investment in Gambaro Hotel, it would be in their interests to have more RL content at Suncorp.
- Dovetail the olympics spend and work with state govt to develop a 25K north Ipswich reserve stadium. 2 Derby home games against Broncos & Dolphins at Suncorp.
- PVL and Gus are no longer besties however interestingly Gus mentioned on twitter a number of times that he felt the 18th team should come from Brisbane.
- Shores up the heartland for good as far as NSW and Queensland goes. Makes QLD league more "tribal". Would make it very hard for competitors in the market to get traction. Other codes will always have their supporter's.

I think they going to play at Suncorp. That train line is due to be improved too

4 teams in SEQ, and two teams entering the comp in succession would really hurt the Dolphins chances of gaining traction and over saturate the market to quickly.

Not that its was a problem back in the day regarding expansion, but NSWRLs previous expansions usually had expanded by 2s and were generally on either ends of the comps geographical stretch, so this wouldn't be an major issue, for example cronulla and penrith... but yeah these days the game is spread all over the east coast, its more likely we'll go back to Perth than back to SEQ for the 18th team

To call Wollongong and Canberra close is a stretch.

But even with your point, guess what? 2 of those 4 clubs don't exist anymore.

He said expansion usually stretched league geographically in different direction. I showed that was false. Try harder next time

I said usually, but not in all cases, besides canberra and Illawarra are pretty far away from each other, and so is newcastle, brisbane and gold coast from each other...
Your talking about distance from the comp...
Not distance from each other...
If you are bringing in several clubs in at the same amount of consecutive following years, they probably shouldn't be near each other

Easts Tigers could cover eastern Brisbane and Logan. They also have affiliate clubs from Bulimba in east-north-east Brisbane to the eastern suburbs in Logan.

I'd love to see them change their name to the Brisbane Bengals.

I think Perth deserves the 18th licence. The game needs to expand.
