You give it not out if you have any doubt whatsoever that it hit the bat, you give it out if you are sure it hit the bat.

What`s Gilchrist on about? Broom shielding the ball from the view of the batsman? Not in the spirit of the game? For mine, he was just going for the ball, and when realized the other guy was in a better position, he pulled out.

you may not have seen a slight touch of the pad or thigh guard by bat or glove. And if you hear the noise at the same time as you see it, it certainly isn't out.
