This is a massive test for NZ. Sri Lanka should be favourites really

Sky claiming Guptill is ranked #6 in the world as an ODI batsmen. That's not even close to true.

Kulasekara is fun to watch and these conditions are perfect for him.

Not Sky - it's Star the Asian/Indian network.

Also explains why these bobbleheads are obscuring the action.

lol

McCullum is hyper aggressive. Sangakarra comes up to the stumps to keep him inside his crease and he still slashes it away off the first ball

I must admit to not being sold on McCullum opening in his hyper-aggressive manner. Obviously there's some depth in the middle order these days, but if McCullum goes early for sub-20 it's a massive loss. Anyway, it's working out so far. Hopefully he's still there in the 15th over.

Rain's gonna be all over this game this morning... You can see it in the hills in the background...

You can also see the ground staff all ready to go on the boundary...

If D/L is going to be a factor this is the perfect start...

Yeah those graphics are ridiculous really. Baz is looking brilliant, but even he is not ranked #1 in the world, as per the graphic.

Yeah boi, officially psyched for this... I went to NZ v Zimbabwe in 1992 at McClean Park and watched my favourite bat of all time, Martin Crowe, belt Zimbabwe around in a nice partnership with Andrew Jones in a rain effected match. Then got to see Danny Morrison castle one of the zimbots as well. That tournament was what really got me into cricket, absolute massive underdogs were NZ given how England had towelled them up without fail in the 1991/92 home summer leading into the World Cup, and then they come out from nowhere to win 7 in a row... Crowe batted magnificently, Greatbatch created an evolution of how openers should bat in ODIs with his super aggressive approach (I remember him hitting either Marshall or Ambrose over extra cover for 6 on the charge, Tertius Bosch over midwicket onto the roof at Eden Park, he was awesome), Dipak Patel bowling off spin at the top of the innings to great effect, Chris Harris running out David Boon from deep midwicket with a throw on the run side on to the stumps, hitting the one stump he could see square in the middle to ensure we won that opening match, Ian Smith coming up the order against South Africa and scoring 18 from 5 I think it was ... ha, the commentators though he had a concert to get to), the dulcet tones of one Henry "my dear old boy, charge your glasses what a superb stroke" Blofield, great tournament...

Watching Malinga side on there, gee, that arm jinks a lot. Is there any Sri Lankan who actually bowls? They've made a reputation for themselves largely on the back of chuckers (not confirming Malinga throws BTW, but it looked a bit dodgey).

I think it started overcast, and then was beautifully sunny. What a great day. I can actually remember the modes of dismissal in that game clearly in my mind, such was how captivated I was by it. I was back in NZ recently watching some of the old '92 games with my old man, and he rightly reminded me, similar to that game, how many important innings Kenny Rutherford played in that tournament. Andrew Jones and Ken Rutherford were extremely important in that tournament... Martin Crowe played IMO probably the most textbook off drive at one point off Bruce Reid, he had stretched right forward onto his back knee and beautifully drove it down to long off. Sumptuous stuff.

Wow... This has to be the best we've started all summer...

Previously it's been McCullum going hard at them and Guptil being scratchy...

But here both McCullum & Guptil are firing... A great sign for NZ in this tournament.

Williamson is a more than adequate substitute for Jones.

Hopefully, Elliot can maintain his form going into the tournament.

I watched the NZ v Eng match from the 92 cup recently. I think Jones even got a couple of wickets in that one, as well as top scoring
