20 years ago Wade would have struggled to make a Shield team. That he has played 30 odds tests with an average in the low 30s is an embarrassment. The batting stocks are so much thinner these days even though they have been given oak trees for bats and had the ropes brought in 20 metres in some places.

Professional batsmen without the patience or the technique to be accomplished test players.

Imagine a time when a shield average of 50 coudln't get you into the test side. Elliott, Blewett, Hodge, Love, even Hayden for years. They'd have 15 year test careers these days.
