That pitch is a disgrace. If any side other than India had dished that up then the ICC would be all over them.

True, and very hypocritical after they way they threw their toys out of the pram during the 2002 tour of New Zealand where they couldn't cope with very green pitches.

Too bad that Australia failed to field anything close to a quality spinner.

Starc has been terrible. I thought he would offer more. He has a mean yorker and gets it to reverse swing. Siddle can at least keep it tight these days,

How the f**k can someone swing the while ball and be near unplayable, yet be so pedestrian with the red ball.

The thing that really gets me down though is if they drop Mitchell Starc im 99% sure they'll bring in Mitchell Johnson

while the pitch looks like a pile of shit, there has been 3 tons so far including a double ton, its looks worse than it is and the Indians are used to batting on this type of pitch

I'd say our problem is our spin attack, not the pitch

2 things

1. Poms got beat by an innings in their 1st test last year, but went on to win series (though lucky for them they have two quality spinners who ripped through india)

2. This first test is not over, no stupid shots and we could pile on 250 plus. a 100-150 plus lead on day 5 could be enough to win it

What we dont want is these last two india wickets to keep batting, we need to get them out within 15 min of start of play. Warner and Watson are the keys IMO. We need big tons from these two. Im not confident Cowan or hughes will do to much, and cant expect Clarke to keep propping us up. Come on Sunshine, you should be real fresh due to not bowling :sarcasm:

We needed to make 500 when we batted. That is what hurt us. Starc and Siddle not making an impact also hurts. Lyon has leaked far too many runs.

Cowan needs to make up for his disgraceful dismissal in the first innings and score a 'FAF' hundred off about 3000 balls to save the match.

He is the only Australian (besides Clarke) who has the temperament to bat for ages. The rest of them will all fail on a pitch that requires nothing more than patience and waiting for the ball to come to you.

India have tactically outplayed Australia by getting after Lyon. They know denting his confidence means Australia get whitewashed. He needs to respond with more than just 3 wickets.

MS is the king of flat track bullies. Has he ever scored a run outside of India.

averages 48.13 in india (40.08 overall)
5 of his 6 test tons are in india (the other one isnt made far away, vs Pak in Pakistan)

Hs test stats are so f*cking ordinary yet his sh*tpile home pitches make him look like a star. 380 on the board and India 2/12.. utter sh*t since then and 1-0 looks inevitable

Dhoni has rigged his Test career.
He has played 46 test matches in Asia, and under 10 in any other continent let alone country.

He'd be averaging under 30 if he faced up equally to different conditions, doesn't stand a chance against quality bowling on neutral pitches.

He's lucky to even have a test career let alone test captaincy, Dinesh Karthik is a much better test player and is a good keeper.

Yeah because Australian wickets are done to suit visiting sides :sarcasm:

Actually Australian conditions are different across each state, its one of the few places in the world that has something for everyone.

Dhoni averages 33.48 away from home so you're not far off

He has but at least he has wickets. The other end needs to be tied down and the seamers just aren?t capable of that.

The other end did a decent job, the seamers did well henriques 2.82, siddle 2.77, starc 3.00, patto 3.42 (4 wickets)

indian run rate 3.65

lyon 4.55 (conceeding almost 200 runs) only 1 maiden

So he's played more test matches at home and in the surrounds (which have 3 of the other nine test nations) than away over a 74 test career. That's alot different to the proportions of others im sure

Do we critique Clarke for playing 52 of his 90 tests in oceania, and 16 in Asia, 12 in England, only five in Saffa/Americas? Clarke averages 63.5 in Oceania and under 50 everywhere else (46 or so in Europe, 41 in Asia, under 40 elsewhere). Obviously a better batsmen but similar sort of drop off.

He's a decent cricketer who sure, gets exposed outside his home conditions, like many cricketers (Matt Hayden and Sehwag the biggest examples).

It also has alot to do with form. Clarkes career best form has coincided with a run of 12/21 tests in Australia - still scored runs in all away tours except Windies. It could prove to be similar with Dhoni.

So yeah, Pretty good knock by Dhoni.

We have to be realistic, no spinner (that the selectors are willing to try) was going to be particularly effective against some of the best players of spin in the world. Bowling spin in India where conditions suit their brand of spinners was always going to be difficult - But then look at Ashwin, who looked an absolute gimp out here - over there.

I dont think Lyon bowled particularly well (just slow the ball down by 4-5km ffs) but it's laughable to think any of the others would've done much better (well O'Keefe obviously has the best record in the shield but they dont seem to like his fairly round arm action, regardless of his figures).

Fortunately it's a four test series, and there's a fairly good chance of saving this one (although that 9th wicket partnership has killed that a bit). There is time to adjust. Playing 4 seamers and a spinner was dumb though, if henriques was to play should've sacraficed a quick (Starc) - although with Doherty Maxwell and Smith the options not sure that would've made a difference.

Siddle looked non-threatening which is disappointing, but at least kept it tight. Starc looked pretty bloody poor, but that wasnt different to his form in Australia, except he didnt cash in on the tail end. Clarkes captaincy not great but not helped by his bowlers.

Thank god for Patto!

That pitch is a disgrace. If any side other than India had dished that up then the ICC would be all over them. Once it was justifiable for India to produce poor pitches as they had no money for equipment but not in this day and age.

I fail how to see how this is a poor pitch. I would much rather see pitches like these rather than the usual flat tracks India has been dishing out regularly since the 2004 Mumbai test. It is simply our fault we went with only one frontline spinner into this test and we are now paying the price for that (Steve O'Keefe, where are you?????). Also, it doesn't help when you're only spinner - who has been getting a lot of turn in this test - hasn't been bowling well. How can you make the most of the conditions when you've only got one stock delivery, and also spray the ball everywhere (bowling full tosses, constantly down the leg side etc.)?

Remember, it was only several months ago that Swann and Panesar wreaked havoc in these conditions (except for the 4th test in Nagpur, which was a flat track). I have a strange feeling that if India win this test in Chennai, we've missed the boat: although Clarke will probably try to rectify his mistake by playing two spinners in the next day, the BCCI will produce flat tracks in Hyderabad, Delhi and Mohali (Mohali's definitely a pitch which is notoriously known for being a road) to negate the spin and maximise the possibility of draws.

I mean, India picked three spinners and we think we can outblast them in their own conditions (which they know better than anyone else) with three fast bowlers????? I don't know what Clarkey was thinking:?
