Acknowledges he made a mistake not refering his dismissal

SKIPPER Michael Clarke has shouldered the blame for Australia’s first Test meltdown — gutted by a failure to fire or review a dubious dismissal against Pakistan in Dubai.

Australia will resume today at 4/59 still pursuing another 379 runs for victory with Chris Rogers on 23 and Steve Smith three.

Clarke conceded he was out of synch after falling for two and three here despite making a matchwinning, undefeated 161 against South Africa in March.

“I’m really disappointed with my personal performance in this Test match,” said Clarke, now averaging just 34 against Pakistan over nine Tests.

“I’m not looking to blame anybody else or criticise anybody else. I’ve always loved the challenge of facing spin bowling.

“I’ve been out twice to spin bowling in this Test match.

“For me right now, personally I need to contribute more. That’s always been my goal as the Australian cricket captain, to make sure I’m leading from the front and scoring plenty of runs.”

David Warner (groin) and Mitchell Marsh (hamstring) carried injury concerns into this Test but Clarke was without serious match practice on recovery from a hamstring strained making 68 in a one-day loss to Zimbabwe two months ago. Dismissals for 10 and 5 followed against Pakistan A.

“I read somewhere the other day that I’m short of match practice and that probably sums my form up at the moment,” said Clarke.

“In the last Test match I played I scored a big hundred for Australia. But I’m short of time in the middle.”

Clarke declined to review an lbw decision despite appearing to inside edge the delivery from pumped up leg-spinner Yasir Shah in the 17th over. Australia’s hope of emulating the 369-run chase that clinched a four-wicket triumph against Pakistan at Bellerive in 1999 appeared a bridge too far with Clarke’s dismissal.

“My mindset is because I’m unsure I didn’t want to waste the referral when I knew the rest of my teammates were probably going to need them tomorrow,” said Clarke

“It was certainly a mistake, an error on my part looking back at the replay once I walked off the field.”

Australia will have to replicate rival South Africa’s grit in Adelaide two years ago batting the final day to prevent a comfortable Pakistan win. Clarke is daring to believe with dogged Rogers and in-form Smith still at the crease.

“I don’t think Australians give up without a fight and that’ll be our goal tomorrow, to fight our backsides off and you never know,” he said.

“Steve Smith is a very good player of spin bowling, Brad Haddin has a lot of experience, Mitchell Marsh looked good in the first innings and Chris Rogers is fighting.

“So we’ll wait and see.”

Australia’s deficiencies on slow wickets have been methodically exposed by a patient opposition — exploiting every inch of its home ground advantage.

Clarke doesn't score runs outside Australia so his two single digit scores are hardly surprising.

Still, how do you not review that?!

A score of 161 in just his last test overseas. Probably the best innings of his career considering the quality of bowlers and reliance on him for the test win with the series on the line against the no1 test nation

Has played FA cricket due to his back leading into this first test

And an avg. of about 40 overseas.

He's been a home town flat track bully most of his career. This isn't an argument, it's a statistical fact.

Whos arguing? Clarke could do a lot better o'seas for sure. Just outlining he scored one of the best tons you could ever want to see...overseas ....in his last test match, and has had bugger all preparation for this series. fmd

What is also a statistical fact is you like to make an appearance here when Australia play poorly.

you have made more posts in this thread than you did in the entire Ashes series

why were you in hiding posting on other parts of the forum but not the cricket section?

Haha I have no defence to this.

I did hide, which was still more courageous than the England team who ran home like cowards.

Credit to Australia. I'm just trolling Clarke now because I haven't had any chance to lately. No doubting he's a great batsman, I'd just like to see him do more overseas consistently before being anointed the world's best.

Useless fact: Australia has only hit 4 boundaries so far this innings (52 overs) and only 1 since Warner got out in the 13th over.

How many batsmen are actually better players away from home?

The true greats are usually similar at least... Sanga vs Jayawardene us an obvious illustration. Clarke is hugely overrated by some, not many of whom would argue Jayawardene is great...

I'm not sure I've ever described Clarke as a great batsman or claimed his away record was fantastic.
